"Turn right in one hundred metres." My body swerved to the right as the car obeyed the metallic voice of the GPS. As soon as the trees cleared I was able to see my mildly disturbing safe place. Pine trees lined to perimetre on the fence with gaps where the doors were. Weeping willow branches swayed in the wind at random places. The stones poked up at regular intervals, with people gathered around, leaving flowers and other offerings.
From where we had parked I could see the stone that I would be going to. When we got out of the car, we headed over to the familiar place. I counted my steps and got to the same one hundred seven that I always got when I visited here. On the front of the stone where the familiar words that marked the deceased, date of birth to date of death and a few words about her. Those words didn't do her justice.
The pink carnations that I had picked from the store were clamped in my hand as we came to a stop. The bench my dad had built was still in front of her stone, just like he had left it so many months ago.
"Eurydice Robertson. Loving mother, sister and friend," Grayson read aloud. No one uttered a word. I walked up and set the carnations on her grave, then took a seat on the bench. My black dress was thin, so I wasn't as warm as I wanted to be. The November weather was feeling more like December, so my dress wasn't cutting it.
"Would you like a minute," Daddy asked.
"Grayson, can you stay with me," I asked quietly. He nodded and sat next to me on the bench. When my dad and brother left, I knelt on the ground near the edge of the grave. This was what I usually did when they left because I'd rather not have an audience when I spoke to my mom. I guess I just felt okay with Grayson being here. It was well past time for him to be introduced as my boyfriend to her.
"Hey Mom," I whispered quietly. The wind blew softly and in a weird way I felt as though it was her telling me that she was here and listening.
"How've you been? I hope God's treating you well, because if not I'll have to come give him a stern talking to," I joked. I stroked the dirt overtop the grave.
"Down here's been okay. Daddy and Jacob are usually busy and Lia and Mia moved to Michigan, but I made a new friend Naomi. She lives with Ashlynn who you know I can't stand, but still, Naomi is pretty cool. She lived in Britain and has a whole bunch of funny stories to tell. You would have loved her like you love Lia and Mia.
"School's been okay, too. French is getting a bit hard, but I can manage," I explained.
"You remember Grayson, right? Of course you do, he was Jacob's best friend. But now he's a bit more to our family. I know you've been watching over us, but I wanted to introduce Grayson as my boyfriend to you now," I said quietly. I looked back at Grayson who was still on the bench, looking around the yard in an attempt at giving me pricvacy. I gently took his hand and pulled him to sit next to me. I wriggled my fingers to intertwine with his.
"Grayson say hi to my mom," I whispered. I didn't expect him to do anything, if anything just look at me funny, but he totally surprised me.
"Hey Eury. You seem to be doing as well as a dead person can do," he teased as if she was still here. A pinecone fell on his head, and I felt that she was trying to hit him in the motherly way she used to. He rubbed the place on his head and chuckled.
"I know you're probably worried that I'll hurt your little angel, but I think I'm doing pretty well with her," he contemplated. It was my turn to playfully hit him on the shoulder.
"He isn't lying. He treats me decently enough and I like him too. We got together I think less than a month ago, on Thanksgiving. I wish you could have been there. You would probably have been hanging out with us since I know you think the adults are so adulty," I snickered. Grayson strung his arm around my waist.
"Daddy and Jacob probably want to get going, so I'm going to have to say goodbye. I love you so much and miss you like crazy. I'll see you one day though. Maybe not soon, but someday. Bye mommy," I said, blowing a kiss to her headstone. The breeze came back, causing the willows to wave slightly. I stood up and dusted off my skirt.
"Are you okay," Grayson asked, pulling me into his chest. I nodded.
"You don't find it awkward I talk to my mother like this," I mumbled. He shook his head no.
"I like that you don't just push her death away. Its good closure I guess," he assured.
"Okay. How about we go get ice cream," I asked. He nodded and strung his arms around my waist. He leaned down and kissed me multiple times.
"That. Sounds. Amazing, " he said in between kisses and I giggled. Having Grayson around seemed to ease the seriousness of it all.
*&*
We were all in my room now: Grayson, Jacob, Naomi and me. All spread on my bed, eating food and watching a movie. I was cuddling with Grayson on one side with Naomi and Jacob more than a friendly close at the foot of the bed.
After our ice cream treat, we came back home. I invited Naomi over, since I may have skipped school and sulked at home and hadn't seen her all day.
"Katy," Grayson whispered into my ear.
"Mhm?"
"You know I'll never hurt you intentionally right," he asked. I stayed quiet. People said that to others all the time, and more than half the time, the exact opposite happened.
"I hope you're telling the truth," I whispered. He pulled me even closer than before and pulled me in for a kiss.
"I cross my heart and hope to die before I intentionally hurt you," he promised.
A.n: Hey! Im not in the mood for a proper authour note, so jist explainations.
How did you like Katy's mommy daughter session? I felt sad writing that but, it would have been written eventually. I've been working on a project, you might see next month. Homework, social life and othet things have caused late updates.
This was editted in my phone, so there are spelling mistakes. Sorry that it was so short. Next chapter will be two ladts because I plan it being kind of long and emotional. But yea!
Something else: You definitely should read the Darkness Rising trilogy By Kelley Armstrong.
Love you lots!
