I fidgeted in my blue dress as Grayson and I waited for his mother in Mandarin's lobby. It had been about eight hours since the woman had popped up at Grayson's front door.
"What if she changed her mind," Grayson asked nervously fiddling with the cuff of his suit. He was wearing this amazing gray suit that fit him perfectly. His hair was all gelled up fancily and he was literally a picture of perfection.
"She wouldn't just change her mind all of the sudden without letting you know," I assured, rubbing his upper arm. However, her past wasn't exactly the best thing to rely on. Andrea, his mom, had arranged for this dinner when we found her on the front porch this morning. After bragging about how her life in Vegas was so fabulous, she practically ordered him to this dinner. Because he was a bit nervous as well as overwhelmed about everything, he begged me to go with him, even though he didn't need to. Ever since Andrea left I was basically glued to his side, trying to calm his shaken nerves.
"Well she changed her mind when she left me," he muttered. I squeezed his arm and shot him a sympathetic glance.
"God, I'm sorry, I'm bitching about seeing my mother again when you probably would give anything for this," he groaned, running his hand down the length of his face. I said nothing. It was true that I would do anything to have at least one dinner with my mother again, but I saw where he was coming from. If I was in his shoes excitement wouldn't exactly be my first thing to course through my veins, after all, abandonment didn't leave the most pleasant memory in a child.
After waiting for another fifteen minutes, Andrea finally arrived with her little boyfriend Rick. She wore a black dress that had more slits than material and a pair of really tall heels. Her dark hair was messily thrown togther, like she wasn't even trying, and her talon like nails were painted a black colour. Rick on the other hand, wore a pair of ripped skinny jeans, a Nirvana band shirt and a pair of vans. You could tell he thought this was just a casual dinner, and even when he noticed it wasn't, he just played it off.
"What's up sport," Andrea said, ruffling through Grayson's hair. He discreetly tried fixing it and Andrea just laughed at his attempts. She turned to me with a puzzled look.
"Weren't you that little kid Jacob's sister? What are you doing here," she asked. Well at least she remembered my relationship with Grayson back then: his best friend's annoying twin.
"I asked her to come," Grayson quickly explained. "She's my girlfriend."
"Why? I remember you telling me how much you hated her playing with you," she said bluntly, as if I wasn't at all there. I cleared my throat.
"With all due respect, that was over ten years ago," I said quietly. She raised an eye at me and grunted.
"Whatever, let's eat," she said and strolled through the door. We followed a waiter to our table for four and sat down.
"So what's up man," Rick asked while Andrea started ordering drinks. I got a vibe from Rick that just felt like he thought he was a whole bunch of years older than us when in reality, he was barely five years ahead. A while after, we all went out to get something to eat. I ended up with some noodles, sushi, chicken and fruit salad. While we ate, Rick and Andrea basically made conversation amongst themselves while I kept shooting Grayson glances and a hand squeeze every now and then when I felt him get nervous.
"So what you into now," Andrea asked. "Hockey? Football? Soccer?"
"Not really, I just chill I guess," he answered. She raised a brow.
"You hit the gym then," she asked.
"Sometimes," he said.
"At least you ain't a lazy ass like your father. Always on a computer. And who was the girl there ther this morning, offering me tea," she wondered, taking a sip of her drink.
"My stepmom, Brenda" Grayson answered awkwardly.
"How old if she?"
"Twenty five."
"Probably a gold digger," she mutter, throwing in a throaty laugh. Honestly she was in no position to criticize, but then again who was I to say anything?
The rest of the evening was pretty uneventful however. A whole bunch more questions, more food and some stares from other tables whenever Andrea laughed. I think Grayson was kind of getting used to her again. He seemed to warm up to her, not completely trusting, but still warming up. If she stayed long enough, they might even be able to get their relationship back in order, and honestly I was really happy for them.
"So how is your family doing, Katy? I didn't see your mom this morning," she questioned.
"My brother and dad are okay, but my mom died a couple years back," I smiled sadly. Grayson grabbed onto my hand comfortingly and smiled at me.
"That sucks," she said awkwardly. From what I gathered tonight, she seemed to be bad with touchy feely type moments, so I didn't take her lack of emotion personally.
"Yea, it really does," I chuckled along.
"Well my dad is expecting me back around now, so we gotta go," Grayson said, getting up. Andrea nodded, not moving to hug him goodbye, and Rick just shook hands with Grayson and nodded at me. Hand in hand we walked out the door and to the parking lot. We climbed into his car and headed home.
"That seemed to go well," I said, turning on some music. He nodded. Suddenly, a little ting sounded. Since we were already in front of our street, he pulled out his phone and checked the message. He smiled at his phone before smirking to me.
"Have any plans next weekend," he asked, swinging onto our street.
"Not that I remember, why?"
"Well now you do."
