It was a cold, rainy night. Marissa Eves had just stepped off of the bus, holding her bag above her head. "Damn this rain... God. Why didn't I bring an umbrella?"

Ring! Her phone buzzed urgently. Marissa growled, running to a nearby bus stop.

♥️ Clarise ♥️ is calling...

Her face brightened. "Clary!"

The voice on the other line was cold and distracted. "Marissa."

"CC, what's up? You never call me by my full name. Are you okay? Are you sick? Do you need me to bring you some soup? I'm near your house. I can buy some and come to you! You know what, I have some hot tea in my thermos!" Marissa's eyes twinkled as she got out the hot tea. Her eyes always twinkled when she talked to Clarise.

"No. I'm not sick... Thank you, though, Marissa. Actually... I want to talk to you. Is that okay?"

Marissa softened, her heart aching to see Clarise. "Of course, Clar. Of course."

"Turn around."

Clarise was there. Holding a pink umbrella, dressed in a flowing blue dress. A... boy. Was standing behind her, on the phone. Her eyes were tearstained. She had been crying. Marissa could tell, her nose always turned pink when she cried. Mascara was running down her face. And yet, she still looked beautiful. No. That wasn't just any boy. That was Marcus, Clarise's "friend" from school. Clarise turned to Marcus, and he leaned down to give her a hug before walking away. She turned back to Marissa. Her blue dress looked like the tears streaming down her face.

"Marissa. Hi." Marissa reached forward for a hug, and Clarise took a step back.

"Clar. What's going on?" Clarise wiped her eyes.

"I... I fell out."

"Of what?"

"Of love. With you."

The hot tea fell out of Marissa's hands and onto the cold floor. Spilling everywhere and scalding Marissa's ankles. She tried to keep from crying. The rain splattered on her maroon hoodie, soaking it to a deep red.

"Marcus... Asked me out. I was on a date with him today." Clarise took a shaky breath. "I'm sorry, Marissa. But I can't love you anymore."

Marissa's eyes widened as she saw Clarise walk away from her. Memories flooded through her head.

Amusement Parks... Clarise wore a beautiful plaid dress. She ate cotton candy while holding Marissa's hand. "Mari, look! They have a roller coaster!"

Horror movies... She would always be scared of them. "I'm scared of this movie. Hold me, Mar."

The fights they had. She would always try to make it right. "Maris, please don't be mad.... Talk to me."

And the promises they made. "Mar... I will never leave you. You're beautiful in every way possible. I... I love you."

"WHAT ABOUT EVERYTHING WE HAD, CLARISE?" Marissa's face was red. Her eyes filled with hurt. Clarise turned.

"You told me you loved me. You told me you would never leave me, Clarise. We were so good together. You were- you ARE my everything!" Marissa was crying now, heartbroken sobs escaping her lips. "Clarise. Please. You can't have loved me that much and still leave me. I'm nothing without you."

Clarise's eyes softened. She walked closer to her teary ex-girlfriend. "Marissa... You've always been an amazing person. I know I loved you. But... Things have changed. I can't love you anymore. I don't want to try. I'm sorry, Marissa." She cupped Marissa's face in her hands, Marissa sobbing quietly. "I will never forget you. That is a promise I can keep. Thank you... Mari." She hugged Marissa, pulling her in tight.

"Goodbye..."

Marissa felt as if her world had crumbled to her feet. She fell, knees hitting the ground, shaking all over. When did Clarise fall out of love? When was she not enough for Clarise? Her body trembled, her heart aching for someone she knew would never love her in the same way again.

"I still love you."
