The Apple Tree

Chapter One

Katie's POV
"Haha ok bye I'll see you later" I said to my co-worker Brian as I left the chip shop. I know, it's not a great job but I live in a small flat so rent is decent. I don't own a car. I like to walk. Since I was small I would always walk to school and from school. I hated cars they made me sick. Especially around here. Dublin, Ireland. The streets were busy day and night. I was digging through my handbag for my phone when I came across the shopping list.
"Shit" I mumbled to myself. "I forgot the shopping." I ran back down the street into the supermarket. It was late so there was no one around. I liked it like this. No annoying children. No trolleys hitting you as you walk past. And best of all no queue at the checkout. I picked up all I needed. I heard the rain outside. Typical Ireland. This means I would have to run home. I walked to the checkout and placed all my items on the counter. The girl was nice. Which around here is quite unusual. Most people working around this part would hardly look at you. She began to talk about how nice and quiet it is. I agreed smiling at her as she packed my groceries.
"Total is €26.47"
I handed her a €50. She smiled and gave me back the change. I took my bag and said goodbye. Finally, I thought to myself a nice girl. They should put people like her on during the day. My apartment wasn't far away. I ran because of the rain, however the shopping made it more difficult. I quickly opened my door and put on the kettle while I got changed. I walked back into the kitchen and put the groceries away. I made myself tea and curled up on the couch with my book. I glanced at the clock above the fire. Nearly 12:30am. I had lost track of time. I had an early shift in the morning so I slept on the couch. It wasn't long before I dozed off to sleep.
