"Okay, so if I keep my lights on at night, will it keep them away?"
She laughed at me, "Nothing keeps them away! It's just a matter of surviving their attacks until they get tired of you and go onto another victim."
"You fucking kidding, right?"
"Why would I joke about this?"
I groaned loudly.
"Then fucking tell me how to survive this! I don't want anyone else to die because of my nightmares."
"Well, uh-"
"What?"
She stopped talking.
"What is it?"
"I, uh, don't really know how to stop them."
My eyes widened.
"Then how do you know that keeping the lights on at night won't stop them?"
"You could try it, but when I did, it just made the nightmares more constant. You see, they like the shadows, and if you turn the light on and get rid the shadows, the only shadow that they'll be able to get close to you with is your own."
"Great. Fan-fucking-tastic!"
"You could try sleeping with another person?"
I turned towards her, "What do you mean?"
"Didn't they last try to hurt you when you were at your boyfriend's house?"
"Yea?"
"Well, when you fell asleep, no one was in the room with you and you had a nightmare. Maybe if you try to sleep with someone watching you, they could keep you safe?"
I thought about this.
"But then I would actually have to tell someone about this."
She shrugged, "So?"
I sighed.
"It's worth a shot."
She smiled.
"Hey, um, I'm getting weak. I'm not really supposed to be with you that long, I'm not as strong as them when it comes to being 'solid'."
"Um, okay. So what? You're just leaving me?"
"Just for now. I'll be back later once I regain my strength."
"Okay."
Just then, she disappeared before my eyes.
I sighed.
"Yep, I'm screwed."
