THE WIND RISES
One of Hayao Miyazaki's last films, perhaps even his most controversial.
It is a story about an engineer named Jiro, who has been in love with planes from a very young age. We see him celebrating his achievements as well as overcoming obstacles standing in the way of his journey.
I personally thought the story was good. However many people seem to have different opinions.
The movie is set in a time of war. Despite Jiro only doing something that he loves, he creates an aircraft that was then used by Japan's forces during the war. This makes Jiro appear to be the 'bad guy', since he was responsible for the creation of a death machine.
Despite these claims, I personally liked Jiro's character. He is a loyal, hardworking engineer and good natured in general. All in all, just a great person, but why was he so interested in that fish bone. I was eating fish, the other day and surprise surprise, found a fish bone. I re-enacted Jiro's fish bone scene and still got nothing out of it, except looking like a deluded weirdo. Maybe it's an engineer thing.
However I still have a few more issues with this movie.
I'm not sure why people are worrying about other, more serious issues, but I'm more confused about the romance between Jiro and Naoko. The two first meet when Jiro is on the way to university and at the time, Naoko only looked 9 at the most. I don't know how old she really is, and I really shouldn't be judging people by their looks, but is no one else concerned about that age gap if what I think is somehow true ??
