PRINCESS MONONOKE
Another amazing fantasy, adventure film with an underlying environmental message.
When the prince of a village, Ashitaka, is cursed by a demon infested boar, he seeks help from the magical forest spirit who he hopes can undo the curse. He travels to the west of the land and stumbles upon an iron producing village. Here, he meets lady Eboshi and the wolf princess herself Princess Mononoke (San).
Along with Porco Rosso, the action scenes from Princess Mononoke are top-notch with mesmerising visuals to match. Along with the action, we get plenty of gore and blood too. Lovely.
The characters designs are spectacular and the movie is known for introducing some of the most iconic characters in Studio Ghibli history. Not only are the designs amazing but the characters themselves are great. No specific character is necessarily evil, nor are any 100% good. This is something I feel many people have pointed out by I rested it anyway.
We can take lady Eboshi who at face value seems to be the main antagonist if the film. However she's just doing what she thinks is right. She treats all of her workers with respect which is much more prominent towards the women of Irontown. She also shows respect towards those who are suffering from an incurable illness, showing that she does indeed have a heart somewhere in there. Some of these positive traits may just be covered up by her greed and ruthlessness.
