Toby looked as though he would throw up as he read the letter.
"What does it say Toby?!" I said. I was jumping trying to reach the letter he was crunching in his hand. Why did he have to be so much taller than me?
"Toby give it here!" I said feeling childish. I finally grabbed the letter out of his hand. I sat on my porch swing begining to read.
Dear Toby and Liberty Jones,
Now that you have seen what you saw I will be watching you.
With love,
Dan
I slowly looked up to Toby's white face.
"Toby?" I said getting up walking closer to him. "Does that mean this Dan guy who wrote the letter... he killed-" Toby put his finger to his lips. I suddenly understood, 'I will be watching you' the words ringing in my head like Dan had whispered it in my ear seconds ago. When I looked up at Toby he was whipping his head in every direction.
"Toby" I whispered.
"Hmm?" Toby said still looking around.
"Can we go inside now?" I only asked this question because he was blocking the door, Toby's eyes widened in surprise I think he had forgotten we were still outside.
"Yeah." he said. As I walked into the living room my cell phone rang. It was Zack.
"Hello" I said in a depressed tone.
"Hi Libbs can I come over for a bit?" Zack asked sounding as depressed as I sounded.
"Of course! I can understand you need some moral support right now." I said suddenly feeling better.
"Alright I will be over in a couple minutes"
"'Kay see you then."
"See you."
"Call ended"
I walked into the kitchen where Toby was.
"What's for dinner? I invited Zack over hope you don't mind."
"That's fine with me, no going up to your room alone though Liberty." I rolled my eyes at this comment.
Why did he baby me I was seventeen? Maybe because he is the only adult figure I have left.
Our parents died on an airplane a year ago. Luckly they said Toby was fit enough to take care of me on his own.
Our aunt pays for everything though she is filthy rich and feels sorry for us. So Toby does not have to drop out of school to support us like he was planning to.
"We are having roast beef and carrots" he sighed answering the question I had asked long ago.
"Yummy" I said smiling at Toby he gave me a very small grin and turned away. Had that letter scared him that much he didn't want to talk?
Suddenly there was a knock on the door and I walked out of the kitchen and through the living room to the door.
It was Zach.
I quickly scrambled to open the door. I jumped into Zach's arms bursting into tears.
"Libbs, Libby, Liberty calm down." He whispered. I stepped back pulling myself together. Zack looked at me as though it was the first time he ever saw me.
"It always fells like the first time." He said. I had a feeling I looked at him funny because he said "Whats wrong?" I turned my head so I was looking him straight in the eye.
"Zack you read my mind..." I said wishing I hadn't that sounded stupid.
"No... Libbs... I just know you to well." He said quickly.
Despite Toby's rules Zack and I slowly drifted upstairs to my bedroom after we ate.
"Your cute when you laugh Zack." I said after seeing him crack up at a joke I told.
"Libbs you are just cute" He said putting and emphasize on the cute.
"I miss Chase's teasing's already." I huffed
"I bet he misses you." Zack muttered under his breath I looked at him strangely.
"What do you mean Zack?" I asked.
"Oh thats right you didn't know, do you remember earlier today when Chase got pissed at me when I told him I was taking you to the dance?" He asked taking my hand.
I nodded.
"Liberty he was so pissed because... he was in love with you."
I stared at Zack unable to believe what I was hearing.
