Epifanio had gotten up first while Camila sat in the bed thinking about how the next few hours would go. He called her name several times and she didn't answer. He gave up calling her name and sat beside her. It wasn't until he put an arm around her that she acknowledged him. Epifanio sighed. He was just as worried as she was. He kissed her cheek softly and held her. The hours before the case were too short.
Isabela found her mother sitting on the sofa. She could tell her nerves were driving her crazy. Isabela stood there, not knowing what to do. She knew her mother as emotionally strong all her life. Now, she was showing fear and sadness. It was scary.
"How's your arm?" she asked.
"Better. It popped this morning and it doesn't hurt anymore. I can only assume it's back in place, but I'm not certain about it," Camila answered.
"That's good," Isabela said.
"I know you're trying to cheer me up, honey. I appreciate you trying to make me feel better, but we have to face reality at some point."
"I know, I just didn't want you to worry so much. Enough has happened already. I was even planning on getting you to leave. I just hated you, but after seeing you with dad... I don't know how to explain it, but I want you here. I used to not."
"I understand. I hated your father, but I loved him at the same time. We started to drift. If it wasn't for Rosario getting in the way, I doubt we would have ever made up. We both drove each other crazy. It takes two, not just one, to cause a split. We talked for a few hours after she abandoned us out in the middle of nowhere."
"I left you out there for about eight hours," Rosario said. "Are you sure you made up some progress by talking or was it something else?"
"Way to kill the mood Ro," Isabela answered.
"Ro?" Camila asked.
"She gave me a nickname," Rosario told her. "And you have to get to court. Time flies when you spend the whole day thinking."
"Why do you have to go to court straight away anyway? Don't they give you a while first?" Isabela asked.
"They said it was a serious offense because I'm the governor's wife and it has to be done now. Bullshit if you ask me," Camila answered.
"I have a really bad feeling about this. I don't think they would make any exceptions for government officials. Then again, it's Mexico. No one is fair here," Rosario added. "Now let's go. We have about thirty minutes."
Camila reluctantly got up from her spot. Now that she thought about it, Rosario was right. Even though there were a lot of corrupt people out and about, even they had fair trials. Well, at least somewhat. If it regarded them of course they cheated the system to save their ass. She tried to put her mind at ease, but what happened next made her feel even worse.
