Chapter 8
They'd been walking in the woods for fifteen minutes now, after being assigned to deal with some pesky ninja who were running a muck in some other small village. Boruto was dragging his feet in annoyance. He was tired, and not to mention in a crappy mood. Every once in a while he would glance over at Sarada, who would give him a look, and not a nice one. She was usually annoyed with him, and being violent was normal, but she was really pissed this time. Mitsuki and Konohamaru could practically feel the tension between the two and were in all honesty, uncomfortable.
Konohamaru walked closer to Boruto. " So what did you do to make her so mad", Konohamaru whispered. " I DIDN'T-", he shouted, getting him looks from Sarada and Mitsuki. Whatever he was about to say was going to be a lie. He was the one who got her angry. " It's none of your business", he grumbled, his voice dripping with hostility. Konohamaru looked at him inquisitively, but decided to let it go.
Boruto saw Mitsuki and Konohamaru huddled together talking in hushed voices as they walked, every once in a while stealing glances back at Boruto and Sarada. They soon arrived at the village. " Oh, thank GOD, you're here!", said a short old man and he rushed over. Boruto was surprised he could move as fast as he did. " These horrible ninja have been attacking our farmers and stealing our crops. Its really hurting us from an economical standpoint", he said worriedly. " If you can do anything, the village would be most grateful.", he bowed and looked at them with desperate eyes. " We'll do everything we can sir", promised Konohamaru.
He turned the three genin. " Okay Boruto, as much as I like the peace and quiet, you and Sarada need to fix whatever thing is going on between you two. Whether its romantic or just an argument ", said Konohamaru smiled. " IT'S NOT ROMANTIC", they both exploded at the same time, blushing furiously. " Sure it isn't. Either way you two are checking this half of the village, and Mitsuki and I will check the other.", he turned away before either of them could oppose. Mitsuki and Konohamaru shared a glance as they walked away, and Boruto could hear them giggling like schoolgirls.
" Let's go", Sarada said flatly and harshly, clearly not wanting to be anywhere near him. They walked in an uncomfortable silence for a couple minutes. Boruto could hear his heart beating audibly in his chest. He wondered if Sarada could hear it too. Even when I'm mad at her I'm still a complete blushing mess!, he yelled in his head. He clenched his fists and focused on the ground. This is stupid, there's nothing here, we're wasting our time. Boruto was silently brooding until he felt a hand on his chest. It was Sarada's. He was sure she could feel his heart thumping loudly in his chest. She even looked at him confused about what was making his heart spazz, but shook it off. "Wha-", he started but she slapped a hand on his face and pushed him to a wall. At this point he was sure his face was a bright, bright red. Sarada let go of him, her black eyes had been taken over by her sharingan, and she was scanning the forest edge. He watched her slip around the corner and immediately followed her. Where the hell is she going?!, he thought.
Boruto followed behind her at distance. He heard her radio in to Konohamaru and Mitsuki. She turned and looked at him, as if all the aspects of them fighting, were temporarily paused, and pointed upwards. He looked up and saw the glint of a kunai, before the trees were enveloped in smoke.
" Sarada!", he yelled, but there was no answer. Instead, a man jumped down from above. "So, you're a shinobi of the infamous Hidden Leaf, eh?", he said smiling maliciously, " You look scrawny for a ninja. Are they feeding you?", he looked unimpressed. "Eh, it won't make a difference. I'm still going to kill you!", he shouted as he whipped out a gleaming katana. Boruto instinctively reached for a kunai and held it out in front of him. Though it provided little protection, it still made him feel just the tiniest bit safer. Where are you Sarada? Are you okay?, he thought. " Aw, that's cute, thinks he can fight me with a pitiful blade like that? I guess the rumors are true, the Leaf kids are slackers!", he yelled. This infuriated Boruto. " You'd better take that back", he yelled ferociously and ran towards him. His kunai clanged with the mans sword. Boruto struggled against the strength of his opponent. He was bigger and stronger than Boruto, and definitely more experienced. Boruto was pushed and slid backwards, kicking up dust everywhere. Dammit! He's way stronger than I thought! Boruto rushed forwards again. He knew he was being reckless, but he didn't have the time to make a carefully planned out strategy. The guy managed to slice Boruto's arm. He grunted in pain as blood went sliding down his wrist. The man took this as opportunity. He kicked Boruto who went crashing onto the ground. He tried to get up but his body was weak.
" Aw, that was short", the man pouted, " I was hoping to have a little more fun, but, alas. Time for you to die!", he yelled as he threw his katana, point first at Boruto. He screwed his eyes up, ready for hell, but it never hit. Instead he felt something drip onto his face. He touched his hand to his forehead and drew it back. Blood. He looked up quickly to see someone standing in front of him, with a sword going through them. The figure fell onto their knees, and then collapsed entirely.
" SARADA!", Boruto screamed.
