Chapter 18
It was a scorching day in Konoha. Like one of those days when you can see the ground wavering from the heat. It wasn't helping that Boruto was running. He had taken his jacket of and tied it around his waist. Damn, I should've worn shorts, he thought to himself.
" BOO!", he yelled when he caught up to Sarada as he grabbed her shoulders. She turned around and looked at him, unimpressed.
" You didn't scare me, dork", she said. " I am not, a dork. Denki's the dork", Boruto said indignantly. Sarada rolled her eyes at him.
" You look hot", she commented. He smirked, " Why thank you for noticing", he said while dramatically running his fingers through his hair.
" Wait wh- That's not what I meant and you know it!", she shouted, " You're sweating bullets".
" Yeah, yeah whatever lets just get out of the sun already", he said, quite satisfied with himself.
They left the busy streets to go to the woods. The trees blocked most of the sunlight so they could cool down. They hiked for a little while in silence, relishing the shade. Sarada pulled out a book from her pocket and flipped through it.
" If you keep reading so much you're gonna ruin your eyes", Boruto said.
Sarada gave him a dull look, " If you keep playing so many video games you're going to ruin your brain. Plus, my eyes are already ruined, stupid".
" Touché", said Boruto. " But video games are way more fun than books so, there".
Sarada scoffed, " I doubt you've read a single book in your life, Boruto. Even if you did you'd have to read a pretty low level, you wouldn't be able to understand some of the bigger words", she teased.
Boruto flushed, " Yeah, well..... you couldn't beat my video game if you tried".
" I don't bother myself with things as trivial as that", she gave him a smug smile.
" Well now you're just trying to sound smart!", shouted Boruto. He crossed his arms with "hmpf".
" I usually do", Sarada retorted.
" I surrender", he waved an imaginary white flag. " What're you reading anyways?", he questioned, leaning over her shoulder.
" To Kill A Mocking Bird. It's a piece of American literature", she answered.
" Eh, sounds really boring", Boruto shrugged. He folded his hands behind his head and yawned. He hadn't gotten much sleep the night before, on account of his new video game. He'd challenged Shikadai to see who could get to level 200 first.
Boruto reached over and pulled Sarada's glasses off her face. " Boruto!", she yelped, " I can't see!".
" Calm down, I'll give 'em back in a sec", he said. He put them on and screwed up his eyes at the unfamiliarity. " How do you even use these. They only make in blurrier", said Boruto.
" That's because you don't need them, stupid", she said, aggravated.
He took them off and blinked rapidly, trying to adjust his eyes. He looked over at Sarada. It was rare seeing her without her glasses. She was scowling at him.
" What?", she asked quizzically.
" Nothing, you just look different without your glasses. Not in a bad way or anything just- , he looked down, stumbling over his words.
He handed them back to her. She put them back on and pushed them up the bridge of her nose.
" Let's sit down I'm sick of walking", Boruto whined. Sarada rolled her eyes and his childishness. " Fine", she sighed.
They sat down in the grass. Boruto took of his shoes and rolled up his pant legs. " Boruto, put your shoes back on your feet are going to stink up the place", said Sarada.
" No they aren't!", he shouted," I took a shower last night for your in-for-ma-tion".
She rolled her eyes at him, " Whatever".
" My stupid old man is leaving Konoha on " official business", he put up air quotes, " and wont be back for a whole month. He wont even be around at all. Not that it would be much different than usual, but still. He could at least make an effort to spend time with us."
" Yeah", said Sarada.
Boruto froze. She never gets to see her dad! And I'm over here complaining! Oh god I'm so stupid!.
" I-I'm sorry Sarada! You're dad's never around at all, I-I shouldn't be, complaining...", his voice faltered and he looked away.
" It's fine Boruto. I know my dad does what he has to do. He's not around because he can't be. Your dad too, Boruto", she turned and gave Boruto a meaningful look.
" It's not that he doesn't love you and Himawari and your mom, he just has a hard job. The most important job in the village. He's strived for it his whole life. And you of all people should know he didn't have the easiest child hood".
" Yeah, I guess he isn't so bad", Boruto said looking down at his hands in his lap.
" Plus, I know you love him. He's your dad after all. You like him more than you let on, I can tell", she offered him a warm smile, which he returned with a small one.
Sarada reached over and poked him on the head with two of her fingers.
" Huh? What was that?", he asked her.
" Oh nothing, you'll get it someday", she said back.
He gave her a dumbfounded look. She giggled at him.
" When is someday? Tomorrow? Next week?", he asked, confused.
" Someday", she said again.
" Huh? Buh-", he said stupidly. This made her laugh even more.
Someday......
