Chapter 19
As they made their way out of the woods, the sun was setting, casting shadows along the faint trail. The frogs were beginning to croak and the crickets began to chirp. There was a calm serenity of it all that made Boruto feel strangely at peace.
" uwaAHHH!", Boruto yelled as he tripped on a root. He landed on the ground with a loud thud that sent flocks of birds flapping in a panic.
" Oowwwwwwwww", he groaned in pain. His ankle throbbed and he clutched it, as if holding it would make it stop hurting.
" Hah!", Sarada exclaimed, " And I'm supposed to be the one with bad eyesight. This is why you watch your step.", she said smirking down at him with her arms crossed. He glared back up at her.
She chuckled a little, " Here". She offered her hand to him and he grasped it. She pulled him up and he stumbled a bit. It really hurt to put weight on his ankle.
He tried to walk but was so obviously limping, a pained grimace plastered on his face.
" You definitely can't walk", she stated the obvious, " Here, just get on my back".
" Hell no! I can walk by myself I'm fine!", he said.
" Oh my god Boruto. Don't be stubborn. It's almost dark out it's not like anyone's going to see you. If it's your pride that's got you so worked up, just drop it", she said, clearly exasperated.
" F-fine", he said, blushing heavily. He got onto her back. She adjusted a little bit and started walking.
" Hey", she started.
" Hm?", he asked.
" Is your ankle, okay?", she said, looking straight ahead.
Boruto smiled a little in spite of himself. Knowing she cared even the slightest but made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
" Yeah, Sarada", he answered, " I'm fine".
He leaned his chin onto her shoulder. She flinched a little at first, and he could see her blushing. He thought this was quite amusing. Usually she was so composed all the time, and he was the blushing mess around her. Seeing her get embarrassed was very rare.
He laughed softly, and smiled a small smile at her. She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. He could tell she was trying to ignore him, but he saw her smile a little too.
He reached over and tucked some of her loose hair behind her ear. She took and small intake of breath, and her face turned an even darker shade of pink.
" Just, what are you trying to do Boruto?", she asked turning her head towards him. Their faces were very close now. She gave him a suspicious look.
" Oh, nothing....", he said. She continued to look at him with a frown, but soon looked back ahead. Boruto let out a breath he didn't know he was holding.
They made it to his house within a couple minutes. When they arrived, Sarada set him down. Boruto missed her warmth.
" Hey Sarada?", he started.
"Hn?", she asked.
" Would you mind sitting outside with me for a little? I don't wanna go inside just yet." What he really wanted to say was that he didn't want to leave her just yet, but he was too embarrassed to say that.
" Sure", she said, and sat on the stone wall outside his house, and he joined. They sat there together and look up at the stars. It was much cooler now with sun gone. Almost the perfect temperature.
Boruto looked over at Sarada. She had her head turned upwards to look at the night sky. Her normally pitch black eyes were ablaze with the reflection of stars.
" What?", she asked, not moving her head. Like she felt him staring at her.
" Your eyes are really pretty.", he said, not tearing his gaze from her. She looked back at him.
" So are yours", she told him with a small smile, " even bluer than Lord Seventh's".
He felt his cheeks get warm. He was surprised when she reached over and grabbed his hand. He then intertwined their fingers and squeezed her hand.
They both smiled softly.
After a few more minutes Sarada said, " I should be heading home now. My mom is probably worrying."
" Alright. Bye, Sarada", he said.
She smiled at him before reaching two of her fingers out and poking him on the forehead.
" Why won't you tell me what that means!?", he asked loudly.
" You'll find out someday", she said, grinning.
She walked away before he could say anything. He watched her until he couldn't see her anymore. He had a goofy grin on his face.
Sarada you truly are a mystery.
