Katy, Katy, Katy. Still hasn't shown up. It's been five days. The morning of the fifth day...I was hoping Maya would be right...I seriously can't take anymore of this rejection my whole life. Jeez. And the Matthews still won't talk to me. And it's all my damn fault. I was a screw up...I'm still a screw up.

Shawn was beside himself at the dining table, sulking over a bowl of cereal. Maya came down to pour herself some milk. Shawn hid his face behind a newspaper to keep his emotions at bay. He couldn't look at Maya for fear of breaking.

"I told you. She does this all the time. I bet you she'll be back today." Maya was the strong one in this moment.

"I'm not holding my breath...Hey, why don't you eat something?"

"I'm good with this glass of milk, but thanks."

"Okay, whatever."

"What? No comeback? Nothing? Wow. You're really down in the dumps."

"It's just...I'm hoping but this hoping thing isn't working."

"Look at me, Shawn...Dad...I'm still here."

Maya cupped Shawn's melting face in her slender hands. They were soft and gentle when she wasn't using them to be aggressive.

"No, Maya, not now. I can't."

"What is wrong with you? You're acting like the world has stopped spinning or something."

"Well, for me, it has. My world started with your mom and you. Now it is coming to a screeching halt, and I can't keep it going much longer. Soon it will completely implode in on itself. I have no control."

"So that's it? Just give up? I thought we were like the same person, but I don't quit when things get tough."

"It's not quitting. It's accepting. Something you'll learn when you get older. You think you can take on the whole world by yourself, but you will soon realize you can't. All you can do is take baby steps in the right direction. Sometimes even a step or two backwards."

The door creaked open, making both Shawn and Maya gasp with excitement.

"Hey everyone! Can I come in?"

It was Riley.

"Oh...Hey, Riley. How's it goin'?" Maya was slightly disappointed but didn't show it.

"Still no sign of your mom, huh?"

"Nope...but she'll turn up...How are your parents? Have they cooled off since the incident? They been letting you do things again?"

"Yep. Hey, Shawn." Riley waved at him with a weak smile.

"Hey." Shawn barely peeked over his newspaper.

Riley looked bewildered.

"It's okay, Riley, Shawn is just sad. You should have Cory come over sometime. He'd make him feel better I think."

"I can hear you...Riley, tell your dad he should call me first before he comes over. That goes for your mom too. I need my space right now."

"Yeah, just keep him in your thoughts and prayers."

"Will do."

"Why don't you two run off to school? I'll see you later." Shawn rustled his newspaper.

"Okay, bye, Shawn!"

"Bye."

"See ya."

The door shut behind them. Shawn couldn't take it anymore. He tried calling Katy.
