Everyone was back for Christmas, sitting around the Matthew's dinner table, everyone except Eric and Nina. It was different this year. The traditions of the past didn't seem to hold as much weight in the present. With the kids now being teenagers (minus Auggie), the holidays became more of a time for socializing with peers and only tolerating their grandparents' kisses.
"Why do we have to be here for Christmas? It would be much more fun to go on a cruise or something...I mean, Eric and Nina got to go to Hawaii." Maya complained so everyone could hear. Shawn's face turned bright red with embarrassment.
Shawn gave a snarky comeback. "For your information, Eric and Nina eloped so they got to have a honeymoon where it's nice and warm, unlike us."
"Hey, hey, hey...let's not bring up my traitor of a brother...He should've had a wedding." Cory sulked as he remembered his feelings of betrayal brought on by Eric.
Grandma Amy was still fuming. "Well, he really should've waited longer. How could he elope with someone on a whim like that? They only went on...what, a handful of dates?"
"I support him. I think Eric made the right decision. Nina is a very kind and fun person." Josh boldly stated this while all of the adults stared him down. Riley and Maya were on Eric's side too.
"Are we going to have a civil holiday here? Just wondering...We don't want a repeat of last time." Grandpa Alan stated. Everyone nodded in agreement. "Besides, deep down we all know Eric is not one to make the best life choices."
"Yeah, but we love him." Cory stated.
"And we should support him...and his new wife, shouldn't we, Hon?" Topanga elbowed Cory in the rib.
"Ouch, yes, of course you're right, my Love." Cory replied with a chuckle. "She's always right."
"Not missing that at all..." Shawn rolled his eyes. "Oh, that was meant to be in my head."
"Hey Shawn, marriage is a wonderful thing with the right person." Topanga stated. "Maybe one day, someone will come along. Just be patient."
Shawn was getting tired of faking holiday cheer. He scoffed. "What if I don't want to be with anyone, you ever think of that? Just because you two are happily married, doesn't mean the whole world needs to be like you, the perfect couple. Barf."
Topanga looked down at her plate in shame. Cory sat speechless.
Turner spoke up. "Okay, Shawn, you made your point. Now can we get back to the meal?"
Amy looked up from her plate. "What is with you today, Shawn? Cory and Topanga have been your favorite couple your whole life."
Cory's face twisted after realizing Shawn's intent. "That is no way to speak to my wife, Bud. Wanna take this outside?" He stood up.
Shawn yelled louder in an effort to one-up Cory. "It'd be my pleasure!" He stood up. They both stomped out of the apartment, slamming the door behind them.
"Well...that was entertaining." Maya smirked. Turner shot her a warning glance, to which she responded. "Hey, after the meal, I'm gonna hang out with some friends, cool? Riley and Josh, you should come with!"
Turner shook his head. "Nope 'caus you're still grounded, young lady, remember?"
"I thought I was only grounded from my phone, not my friends, see?"
"Nice try, Maya. After the meal, we are going straight home. None of your sass, hear?"
"Fine." Maya crossed her arms. Riley looked at her with a sad, puppy-like expression.
