Ch. 5/P. 4: What Is Love? (Baby Don't Hurt Me)

(still the same day, Thanksgiving)...

Lucas's POV:

I wonder if what Eric said is right. Have I been the one at fault, not being clear about what I want? I didn't think it was a big deal at the time. I mean, it's not like I'm really dating anyone in a serious way. It's just a fling, experimenting with different people to see who is right for me. Where's the harm in that? So, I go check on Riley, right? She won't even talk to me. What did I do? I'm so confused. I decided to give Riley her space and went for a walk to clear my head.

Riley's POV:

Why are boys so...grrrrrr! It's so frustrating. Only Maya would understand because she's a girl. Maybe Lucas is just a player. Maybe he is just "playing the field" or something, whatever Eric said.

Maya's POV:

Awe, I hope Riley's okay. I feel bad, like I was the one who pushed her into the place she's in. If I was there for her, this wouldn't have happened, all because I let a stupid boy come in between us. I just sat next to her outside on the sidewalk and let her vent and cry. At least she's opening up to me again. It feels good to be vulnerable...I should try this more often.

Josh's POV:

I wonder if I can help in any way...I mean, I am a little older than them. I could bring something to the table maybe...I decided to sit by Riley and try to help Maya get through to her. It must be hard to be a girl. Guess I wouldn't know. It's nice that Maya cares about Riley so much. It shows some good character. Maybe I can talk to her after this? See if she wants to exchange numbers or something? Lucas is NOT her type. THAT I know for sure. He's not Riley's type either. He's not even trying to help the situation here. What a loser. He's got bigger fish to fry if he thinks he's going to pull a fast one on them. It'd be better if he just took a hike.

Riley's POV:

It feels better to let off some steam. It turns out Maya still does care about me. She said that if it made things better between us, she would stop pursuing Lucas. That's my Maya, my best friend for life! I'm so thankful to have her. She said that if I can't be myself, then it's not worth keeping the guy. I think I might give it time before I start dating again. I guess Lucas and I can just be friends for now, at least until we each know what we want. It's good to be mature about this.

Josh's POV:

Whew. Looks like things are better for Riley and Maya now. I'm glad. I need to make my move before the night is up. I hope she'll consider me or at least want to text me. That'd be nice. I'd be a way better fit for Maya than Lucas. He should scram, the loser.

Later that night on Thanksgiving...

"Hey, Maya, wait up." Josh tapped Maya on the shoulder before she went in the car. "Can you come here for a second? Just a second."

"Sure, what's up?" Maya gave a curious look.

"...The way you took care of Riley...I mean, as her uncle, I approve."

"I wouldn't do anything to intentionally hurt her. I'm always there when she needs it."

"Yeah, I like that...hey, I figured I'd just say...be careful with the guys you let in. I don't know if Lucas is really trustworthy. He seems like a bit of a player, ya know? I just want you to be safe."

Maya was a little offended by his words. "Thanks, but I think I know what guys are good for me."

"Oh, I'm sure you do. I just care about you...ya know, as your best friend's uncle and all." He nudged her and cracked a shy smile. "Um...can I get your number? I don't know when I'll be in town again."

Maya was surprised at the question and didn't know how to answer. "I mean, sure, I guess." She was searching his facial expressions to see his intent.

"Thanks. I'll be here whenever you need me." Josh said.

"You mean if I or Riley needs you?" Maya gave a devious smile and a wink.

"Yes, that's what I meant." He gave her a side hug and a laugh.

She laughed too and gave a longing stare. "Well, see you around."

"Yeah, see you for cake again next year! Maybe we'll actually get to have some next time."
