Chapter 7

It was night time and everyone was asleep, all but one. Naruto was up and he was sitting by the river looking up at the sky, in deep thought. So kit, almost ya' b'day whatcha gonna do? Kurama asked and Naruto sighed sitting up.

Dunno, I never do anything on my birthday. Naruto thought staring at the ground. He rested his chin on the palm of his right hand and his elbow rested on his leg.

Sakura couldn't sleep that night so she got up and decided to take a walk around the area, just not too far. As soon as she came out of her tent she spotted Naruto sitting on the ground, half naked.

"Your going to catch a cold if you don't wear a jacket." Sakura said and Naruto his head to be greeted by Sakura's warm smile.

"My jacket got burnt off by one of the rogue ninja's and one of them managed to pick picket my scroll that contained my clothes." Naruto said looking back down.

Sakura sat next to the blackette and awkward silence was all that there was, "why did you disappear all those years ago, Naruto?" She asked breaking the silence.

Naruto's hair shadowed his eyes, his lips forming a straight line and his body shook. Sakura looked at him and Naruto looked up. She saw it all.

The pain.

The suffering.

The regret.

The isolation.

The anger.

The hatred.

"Not yet... not yet... or I'll kill em'!" Naruto growled. Sakura put her hand on Naruto's shoulder and he gasped, he blinked then looked at Sakura.

"S-Sorry, it's complicated, you'll know soon." Naruto said faking a smile, it was convincing to Sakura but on the inside she felt like it was fake.

"I can tell you one thing." Naruto said and looked at Sakura seriously. "Don't get too close to me, otherwise I will never be able to forgive myself, not after that event."

Sakura sighed and hit Naruto on the head making the blonde grunt in pain and rub his head to sooth the pain. "Ow! What was that for Sakura-chan?" Naruto asked.

"That's the Naruto I know." She giggled as Naruto pouted, he crossed his arms and legs looking away.

"You know, I never got to thank you for bringing Sasuke back, that day." She said and Naruto looked at Sakura unexpectedly getting a kiss on the cheek.

"Thank you," she said getting up. "Goodnight."

Naruto sat there in shock, he put a hand to his cheek where Sakura kissed him, a light blush appearing on his cheeks. If only I could see your face! Kurama laughed.

Naruto's face went full red and he turned to face the nine-tailed fox. "Shut up, bakarama!!" Naruto yelled a tick mark appearing on his temple with his face still red.

The Next Day

The team were all up and ready to go back to the village with Naruto of course. He took the lead and played extra attention to his surroundings in case of an ambush.

They made it to the village safely but to Naruto he couldn't help but feel like someone or something was watching him in the darkness. "Kakashi, do you have a spare mask?" Naruto asked.

"Why?" Kakashi asked.

"Just gimme the mask." Naruto said and Kakashi handed him one. In a split second he put the mask on and all the villagers looked at Naruto curiously.
