As she placed her suitcases inside the trunk of her mom's car, she took one last look at the house, which was surrounded by neighbors who kept eyeing her from time to time. It was one thing to live in a friendly neighborhood, but it was another thing to see your face on the news the next morning for doing something illegal and unforgivable, as authorities said.
The mural stunt she did made headlines across the whole country, triggering politicians and environmentalists alike. What's worse is that the media was able to figure out her name, her educational background, and her address, which definitely did not contribute in keeping a private life. Since her stepsiblings are still young, her parents thought it was best to send her off, so that they can focus on repairing their family's reputation and steer their life back on track.
"Noah, can I talk to you?" Anthony said, causing Noah to turn around and look at him.
"Look, I know that you're not enthusiastic about this whole 'summer with your grandad' thing, but I wish that this gift will make things easier for you," Anthony said, then he gave her a necklace with a huge pendant on it.
"This is kind, but, I'm not a huge fan of big pendants," Noah declined the gift politely, but Anthony gave it to her anyway.
"It's just something to remind you of home. And, don't tell your mom that I gave this to you," Anthony said, then Noah studied the big pendant. She put the thing in the pocket of one of her suitcases and turned to him.
"Thanks," Noah said shyly, then Anthony flashed her a sad smile.
"I'm really sorry, kiddo. I wish there was something that I could do to get you out of this mess," Anthony said, then Noah shrugged her shoulders.
"It's fine. I'm fine. You don't have to do me any favors; you're not my dad," Noah said bitterly, causing Anthony to bite his lower lip in nervousness as Noah walked away and opened the car door to get in.
"I promise that I'll be home in time to celebrate Nana's birthday, okay?" Noah's mom told her husband, who nodded at her words and gave her a peck on the lips before letting go.
"Well, shall we go, then?" Noah's mom asked her, then Noah meekly nodded her head. They both climbed in the car and headed to the airport after their family waved them goodbye.
"Do you have your passport?" Noah's mom asked, then Noah looked for it in her bag and showed it to her mom, who was relieved. While she was packing her stuff three days ago, her mom gave her a lengthy speech about the consequences she will face if she does anything to delay her flight.
"I hope you aren't thinking of escaping from your flight," Noah's mom said beside her, then Noah glared at her mom.
"I'm not. Can you stop thinking that I will? You've technically got me on a leash, mom," Noah said, then her mother glanced at her.
"Don't use that tone with me; you know that I'm doing this for your own good," Noah's mom said, then Noah sighed. She can't stand being in the same place as her ever since she was 16, and whenever she didn't have a choice, she'll take a drag out of her trusty cigarettes. Thankfully, they no longer talked until they got to the airport.
