Sanctuary.
I felt like butterflies had lifted me off the ground, soared me through the clouds and let me meet my father for one final goodbye. It was so peaceful, free, safe, it was as if no one could touch me through the happiness that had swirled around me. I knew what perfect meant, well, at least by my father's definition. I would do whatever I could to achieve that goal, 24/7, for the rest of my life.
Even now, standing before my mother and siblings with the letter tucked neatly into my back pocket I had a warm feeling growing inside my heart. I had one more year of high school, then I'd hop into college with my excellent grades and train to be a lawyer.
Just like my father was.
Aiden's arm was slung around my waist, my mother chatting away with Pria as my sister spoke of our time at the safety deposit box. Preston was gaming on the downstairs T.V. as Pamela lazily watched my brother shoot the aliens coming towards him.
I scoffed, stepping away from Aiden and coming up behind the couch on which my siblings sat. I bent down and wrapped my arms around Preston's neck in a backwards hug. I gave him a long kiss on the cheek, causing him to squirm away, "Peyton, you're going to make me lose."
I laughed, "When everyone leaves, I'm going to make you lose so bad at that game."
Preston stuck his tongue out at me, knowing for a fact that I could take him down in any video game. Pamela giggled, "Oooh Preston, sounds like someone's gonna get beat!"
I grinned at my four year old sister, amazed by how much she'd changed in the last eight and a half months since I had lived here. Even in the seven long months that I had been away, she seemed to have grown up by a whole year.
"Okay, well, you kids get out of here. I'm making dinner and Preston has a friend coming over, there is not nearly enough room. Shoo," my mother whipped the kitchen towel in Pria's direction, then stepped forwards to Aiden with a grin on her face.
The three of us raised our hands in surrender and waved a quick goodbye to our siblings before racing out the front door. Pria laughed as we tumbled onto the driveway, and she pointed at me with a finger, "You coming home for dinner?"
"No," Aiden answered for me, "She can eat at my house."
I raised an eyebrow, finding this to be new news for me to hear. I shrugged, "Sounds good. I'll see you later, Pria," I said as I blew her a kiss.
She rolled her eyes, waving as I followed Aiden into his house. I watched until Pria's car roared out of the driveway next door, then finally kept in pace behind Aiden as we went up the stairs. Amelia gave me her usual toothless smile as we passed her room, but Aiden glared at her as a warning to leave us alone. I giggled, making faces to Aiden's back as Amelia giggled away. Aiden closed his bedroom door behind me and I flopped backwards onto his bed. I let out a sigh, "Isn't life the strangest thing?"
Aiden scoffed, "I'd say. You know more about that than anyone." He smirked, kissing the top of my mouth as he leaned over me.
I smirked, "Remember when you said you loved me?"
He licked his lips, "Yea, and you said maybe."
I smiled, sliding my fingers inbetween his. I closed my eyes, my head facing upwards against the ceiling, "I also remember when you said maybe always means yes."
