"Goodnight, Night Vale. Goodnight."
Cecil pushed back in his chair, the microphone clicking off. He checked his phone, smiling to see a text from Carlos reading 'Coffee?'
Cecil replied with 'Sure, where?' and pocketed his phone. Carlos could get easily distracted, so Cecil had learned not to try waiting around for an answer. With the phone on vibrate, he headed outside.

"Ok, that was good pizza."
"Yeah. Do you think we can take any home with us?"
"I don't know..."
The voices faded as the two men walked away, but Cecil's gaze followed them. He didn't recognize those people, and he was very good with faces.
They were not from Night Vale.
Just as Cecil started to think about what this might mean, his phone buzzed with another text from Carlos.
'I was thinking I'd cook?'
'Sounds great'

About an hour later, Carlos and Cecil were cleaning the dishes from dinner. The two talked about their day -  neither tended to talk during a meal - and that was when Carlos brought up the strangers.
"Did you see those two guys today?" He asked. "I went out earlier to get some stuff for the lab, and I saw them going into the hotel."
"I think I saw them too. A tall one and a short one? Two guys?"
"I think so," Carlos replied. "I didn't really pay much attention, though. Too worried about the tests I had to get back to."
"Tests?"
"Yes, actually! I believe I am close to discovering just what makes the Whispering Forest so...whisper-y. You see..."
Carlos began recounting the various tests he'd run on samples from the Forest, but the words themselves missed Cecil. Instead, he just listened to the sound of Carlos' excited voice, and loved every second of it.
