The car was quiet on the way to Old Woman Josie's. After shooting footage for their video, Ryan had fallen silent, only offering distracted words in response to Shane's attempts at conversation - some of which were directed at Carlos, which the later was happy to oblige. With no signs of having started turning into a tree, Carlos suspected that Ryan was just lost in thought, though he couldn't blame Shane for being concerned.
Finally, Shane gave up, and Cecil's voice filled the car - Carlos had turned on the radio, of course.
"And so, dear listeners, we have with us a...special guest...here with us today." He sighed, and Carlos smiled. Cecil only used that tone for one person.
"Steve?"
"Well, hi Cecil!" Steve Carlsberg's voice replaced Cecil's. "Thanks for having me on your show."
"Yes, well, you said you have something important you would like to share with the listeners, so...go ahead."
Carlos couldn't help but laugh at Cecil's dislike of his brother-in-law. Their relationship had improved considerably, but Cecil still wasn't keen on most of Steve's opinions. Carlos, however, found them quite interesting - Steve, though a native Night Vale resident, seemed to be the only one in town who acknowledged some of the strange goings-on.
"Well, Cecil, I know you don't like it when I mention government conspiracies and stuff," Steve resumed, "But I think there's some sort of new surveillance being implemented in our city!"
Carlos frowned. Surveillance? Surely Steve couldn't mean the measures taken by the Sheriff's Secret Police to keep tabs on everyone in town - that was common knowledge.
"Steve," Cecil replied, echoing Carlos' thoughts, "Everyone already knows about the-"
"No!" Steve cut him off, "It's not the Sheriff's Secret Police. At least, I don't think so. But it's new! A few days ago, I saw two men arrive with cameras and recording equipment - they came from out of town."
Carlos glanced back at Shane and Ryan, both of whom were paying attention now.
"And then just earlier today I saw them load some of the stuff into a car and get in. I didn't see who was driving, but they went off towards the edge of town."
There was no doubt about it. Steve was talking about Ryan and Shane - and Carlos, as he was the driver.
Carlos didn't mind. He was used to Cecil talking about him on the air often enough. The other two men, however, looked a little uneasy.
"Now Steve," Cecil started again, "And any listeners who may be concerned. I can tell you this for sure; those aren't government agents, they're just here to shoot a video. A video, in fact, about our city! Isn't that fun, listeners?"
