"What the hell is that?"
Ryan was surprised to hear that it was Shane who had finally broken the silence that had blanketed the room since the figures appeared.
Old Woman Josie glared at him over her tea. "Hell? Young man, if you aren't more respectful, I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to leave." She went to take another sip. "That or the Angels will throw you out themselves."
"Did you say Angels?" Ryan, still gripping the arms of his chair so tightly that his knuckles were white, never took his eyes off of the three figures as they moved through the kitchen. They were tall, taller than Shane (though Ryan didn't have it in him to joke at the moment), and had long, thin, feathered wings. It was hard to tell where they were facing, because their abnormally round heads had eyes spaced out all around it. There was one larger eye on each head, so presumably that was the front. The figures wore no clothes, but as they were clearly not human, they had nothing to cover. Two of them were white - as in their skin (at least that's what Ryan assumed and hoped it was) was pure, almost blinding white. The third figure was black, in the same sense as the other two were white.
"Yes," Old Woman Josie confirmed, "Angels." Off of a look from Carlos, she plowed on. "Don't! I know what you're going to say. They are Angels, and that's that."
Without prompting, Carlos turned to Shane and Ryan, neither of whom had recovered in the slightest. "The official stance on Angels, at least here in Night Vale, is that angels do not exist."
"Tell that to Erika."
"Which one?" Carlos asked, a sly grin flashing across his face.
"Exactly," Old Woman Josie returned with a grin of her own. Finally she looked back to her other visitors. Seeing their expressions, she tutted. "This won't do." She turned to the figures - Angels? - and said "Excuse us, but now is not the best time." One of the figures turned it's larger eye towards her. "Don't look at me like that. I'll buy more tea later. We have guests, if you hadn't realized."
At this, all three figures turned to face (Ryan just assumed their larger eye was the front) the three guests. Ryan and Shane shrank back into their seats, but Carlos leaned forward, eagerly studying them right back. The figures silently and expressionlessly appraised the men, and then all of a sudden were gone.
Old Woman Josie huffed. "Guess I'll be going to the store, then. I used the last of our tea for this."
Ryan studied the teacup before him. If those beings were in fact Angels, were they angry that their tea was gone? If he drank it, would they be angry with him? Ryan nudged his cup away. He glanced over at Shane, who seemed uncharacteristically shaken.
"Hey, man," Ryan heard his voice shake, but went on. "You good over there?"
Shane looked over at him, and immediately, his face cleared. "Oh, uh, yeah. Yeah, totally."
"Really?"
Shane glanced away. "Ask me after we see the rest of town."
