Once I was out, I took in the view before my very eyes. We were in the middle of nowhere. However, there was one and only on path from the house to God knows where it lead. I didn't know how long it woud take. The only thing I actually did know was that I needed to move, and fast.
The distance I walked, must've been the longest I had ever aced in my entire life. It took a few hours. Either that, or my completely broken arm and the summer heat was getting the best of me. When I finally reached a house, I was ready to pass out.
The hunger, the pain, the open scars, the heat, the adrenaline. It was all too much.
I knocked on the door in a quick motion. An old lady opened the door.
"Hell-OH DEAR COME IN!" She ushered me in with a soft touch to my side. As soft as my mother's touch used to be.
"Let's aid you honey, who did this to you?" The look on her face was absolutely horrifying. I don't think I looked presentable myself.
"Can I please use your phone? It's kind of an emergency." I gestured to myself. She quickly nodded and handed me the phone before she went over to the stove to possibly, hopefully get me a bowl of whatever there was to consume. I had dialed my house phone in a heartbeat.
"Hollis Residance."
"Oh, sorry. Wrong number." I apologized, hanging up the phone. I re-dialed the house number, only more carefully this time.
"Hollis Residance." I decided to question myself. Was I starting to hear things? Had my hearing been damaged?
"I'm sorry, I'm looking for a Veronica Starks?"
"The Starks' have moved house 2 months ago." I believe my brain froze right there and then. They were gone? Without waiting for me to be rescued?
"Thank you." I said before hanging up. My eyes stinged as a lump grew in my throat.
They didn't care?
I wasn't even found yet and they decided to move house, not bothering to think that maybe I'd somehow escape and come running back home. I didn't even know where they lived anymore. I was too quick to call the police, right before the electricity was cut off.
"DAMNIT!" I yelled.
"Something wrong dear?" The old lady asked in concern.
"The electricity's out."
"Oh dear! It won't be back for a few days, it always has been like this." A few days later, they would be back. I wasn't going to risk this woman's life. "Here's your pasta with meatballs and cookies. They should keep you full for awhile." She smiled sadly. "Are you sure you don't want any aid?" She asked practically begging.
"As much as I want to, I can't." I said before stuffing my face. An idea popped into my mind. "Can I have a pen and a piece of paper, please?" The old woman held up one finger and dissappeared out of sight for a moment before returning with her hands full: a few pieces of paper and a pen.
"Do you happen to know this place's postcode?" I asked. She nodded and wrote it down on the envelope.
Thank God, I prayed once again.
I don't know why I started to feel so lightheaded, but as soon as I jolted down an address barely knew -my sight was blurry from the tears that rimmed my eyes, which wasn't helpful at all, I tried to focus my sight on the letter.
I didn't know what to write.
The frustration finally broke me down and without having the chance to stop it, I was bawling on the table in desperate need of help.
I couldn't remember what I wrote down but I knew for a fact that, that letter had been on it's was to what I hope, a real destination and I was walking back to that hell house with the same ripped up lip and twisted arm.
