After driving for never ending 11 hours and an addition of 38 minutes, we finally got to Michigan, Detroit Police Department.
Truth be told I was nowhere near exhausted. I had listened to everything the detectives have told me and exchanged in conversation.
I learned that Alicia, 17, has been searched throughout the whole 4 months of her kidnap, requested everyday by her brother. Adopted, Alicia was. Her brother was blood-related to her and the only one as so in her current family. I couldn't help but wonder why Alicia's brother wasn't here as well. It should have been the first thing the detectives have done after finding the biggest clue to Alicia. I barely knew her myself and I was deathly worried for her life condition. I couldn't possibly imagine as to how her brother felt, the state he was in, has been in since her kidnap.
I knew for a fact that I needed to be patient. I needed to stay positive. As much as I could, anyway. No matter how hard I tried, there were always the bad thoughts trying to find their way into my overracked mind. I had to keep my concentration on the road and how I could be helpful the most.
I still couldn't trace the panic source that was overwhelming me. I couldn't keep my mind straight. Flashbacks kept me daydreaming. Staring into space was causing me to doubt the condition of my eyes.
The police department in Detroit was a blur. The detectives had asked for backup after showing proof, the proof I had brought in if I may add and we were soon on our way. Tree after tree, the further we drove the more deserted this town became. 'Ghost town this side of the city' was called I recalled the ginger middle-aged detective from the police department say. 'One of the worst cases had been there', he said. 'Not many survivors', he added.
I needed to thank him for his helpful and hopeful input later on.
I felt my pace quicken as I remembered the conversation. It had taken every ounce of me to all but not jump out of my seat and protest.
Waiting around hadn't helped very much. Every passing second was draining my patience and it was starting to get a bit uneasy to control myself.
The only sleep I had in the period of time I'd been here was after the shower I'd taken and the hot chocolate that'd been forced down my throat.
The car coming to a halt, jerked me out of my thoughts. I looked around my surroundings through the windows.
"Where are we?" I wondered. On my left was a small house. It had 2 floors, a lovely garden that looked like it hadn't been watered in a while and was slightly withering because of it. This house was completely lonesome in the forest. It seemed quite peaceful. That's what I would have thought a week ago. Except all that I'm thinking about right now is how the person who lived here would run in case of people with bad intentions came to the house. Where would they go? How far could they get before they got caught? Would they survive?
A nudge to my arm made me look to my side. Sam was signaling me to the house. I stayed where I was, taking in every moment as the detectives walked up to the white door, ready to knock when all suddenly stopped.
The door was open.
Not in an "a by passer can see" way, but in a "cracked open, barely visible" kind of way. I watched as Detective Beckett slowly opened the door and stepped inside with backup.
"Why is the door even open?" I wondered aloud. By now I noticed that my questions would not be answered until after the heat of the moment.
"Clear." I heard a muffled voice announce. A couple more officers voiced the same word. Curiosity overcame me. Who would leave their house empty with the door open in the middle of the day? Before I could stop myself, I walked into the house.
The house was a wreck. The chairs in the kitchen that was visible from the entrance were disordered. Two of the chairs were on the floor and the rest was far away from the kitchen table. Taking a step forward, I stepped on a picture frame. As I removed my foot from the broken glass, I saw an old lady in the picture. 3 sons. There was a smile on each of their faces. Only the mother was in the picture. She must've lived alone in the house.
As I walked through the house, I came across grandchildren portraits, black-and-white back in the day pictures, young love pictures I envied. Being so far away from family, from the rest of the population. The reason behind it mocked me with its mystery.
"Payne." Someone called from a room. I marched towards the source. Beckett greeted me.
"We found blood in the living room. Now, I don't want you to panic, it might not be Alicia's." He said. I knew there was a possibility something bad would happen. If it wasn't Alicia's blood, it was only a matter of time before-
I shook my head, prying myself off the thought of such things. I walked back to the living room. Honestly, I was sad when the house was found empty. The person that lived here could have been a lead to Alicia, or a guide around this place.
A middle of nowhere.
The detective, known as Thomas, came next to me.
"Sorry, kid." He put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. A sigh escaped my lips as I looked out of the window that showed the front yard. The broken mailbox caught my attention.
"Hey!" I yelled, bolting out of the door. I pulled out my phone and pulled up the pictures I took earlier. The zip code on the mailbox and the one on letter matched. She was here a while ago. Alicia had come to this house and wrote this letter.
The detectives were hot on my trail. "The zip codes match. According to the letter, she has a lot of broken bones. This house shouldn't be much further from her location. I'm calling backup to search the district."
Hopefully, we were at the end of this nightmare.
