The Varyag she captured not so long ago was slowly becoming her own shadow, the one that never left her side, but unlike the shadow, he wouldn't leave her even in the dark. Ever since her husband Oleg, died, Daria didn't look at any other man. Everyone else were simply no match for him. Oleg was strong, powerful, he was unpredictable, dangerous, everything that could make Daria to feel like a strong and protected woman by his side. And that is what made her fall in love with her husband at first. After his death, she was looking for him in the reflections of every other man that she meet, but not in Ivar the Boneless because he was simply way too eccentric, and interesting, enough to make her forget about everything that would so desperately evocate her own mind. That night when she told him a story about herself, she felt she broke the walls that were protecting her emotional personality, and yet, he still respected her.
It was a cold night. The wind was mercilessly blowing, as the snow was falling and covering everything on its way. It was probably around midnight, the time when the thoughts are the wildest and the most nostalgic. Daria couldn't sleep. She got up from her bed and put her coat on, because the halls of the castle weren't as warm as her chambers. She used the candle to light her way. The guards were mostly sleeping, while some of them were awake in case the princess needed the protection. Daria walked silently when she saw Ivar on the window. The moon was shining so bright on his face and she could easily notice that he was deep in his own thoughts, she almost felt like she was dreaming.
"Ivar." She called, and disturbed him, but he didn't seem to notice that.
"Princess, why aren't you sleeping?" He asked in soft voice as his sleepy gaze was became fixed on her. She wasn't wearing the usual lavish dresses, her long, bwhite hair was sliding down her back, shining as it was a silver, she looked so simple, and yet so stunning. She didn't respond to his question. She simply moved and stood beside him.
"I made my mind. We are going to attack Kattegat after the winter. Soon, I am going to see Oleg's brother, prince Askold. He has the army that I need."
"Why are you so sure he will give you the army?"
"I have a god on my side." Daria replied as her lips curved into a smile.
"Sometimes, I think you truly started to believe me."
"No, I am a Christian, have you forgotten that?"
"Of course I haven't, but the Christian God, never seemed to help anyone in England. Maybe Christian God, doesn't love them so much?" Ivar chuckled.
"And maybe they were stupid enough to allow you to kill two of their kings. Even the God can't help stupidity."
"Are underestimating me princess?"
"No, and that is why I wanted to warn you, that even if we are considered to be close, if you ever find a way to betray me, I will not murder you, I will torture you in the ways you never thought were possible. I do not forgive the betrayal, that is something I hate the most." Daria said and looked at him, but Ivar didn't say anything for a moment. He smiled slightly.
"You would be an amazing Viking." He said.
"Me? Varyag? What makes you say that?' Daria asked.
"You are the only Christian woman that ever gained my respect. You are dangerous and fierce, you show no fear." Ivar stated.
"If I renounced my name, country and religion, and became a Varyag, how would you name me?" Daria asked curiously.
Ivar looked at the moon, it didn't take him long to think about the name he would give her before he whispered.
"Brynhildr" He answered to her and she frowned. It looked as that weird sounding name meant something to him, but for her, it sounded like something she wouldn't even be able to say it right.
"What does that name mean?"
"Brynhildr was a princess and a Valkyra, and was said to be the one who disobeyed Odin . She was stripped of her Valkyrie powers, she was put into a deep slumber, on a castle on top of a mountain surrounded by a magic fire, and can only awakened by a brave man with a kiss, which she was by Sigurd, the dragon slayer. Then she had a daughter with him. Her name was Aslaug, and that woman was my mother." Ivar said. Daria felt something warm inside of her. What he had just told her was something really beautiful and for a moment, she felt guilty she is sometimes so mean to him, but she said nothing about that. Instead, the curiosity got the best of her.
"What happened to Aslaug?"
"My mother was killed by Lagertha, the first wife of Ragnar. And that is another revenge I haven't fulfilled." Ivar answered with his eyes still fixed on the moon, but his serious face was soon replaced with a smile. "But when we take the Kattegat together, we are going to fight the most glorious battle, the Gods have ever seen, our names will be in the history, they are going to make so much songs about it." Ivar said proudly and Daria chuckled.
''I simply adore how optimistic are you."
"I just have a fate in you princess, unlike you do when it comes to me." Ivar said and looked at her. "Why did you mention the betrayal?" He asked.
"I can never be careful enough."
"You are simply too smart to let your guard down. But are you afraid of me?" He asked making Daria laugh. He was a dangerous and unpredictable man, but she wasn't much different from him. Two of them could either do amazing things together or destroy each other in the darkest ways possible. Maybe somewhere deep inside of her, she was scared of seeing a vicious and a dark side of him.
'Should I?" She asked.
"Of course not." Ivar answered with a smile on his face and touched her cold, and pale hand. He bent down and kissed it making her cheeks blush.
"Goodnight princess."
