White Smoke

You waved a hand in your face to move the cloud of smoke away and took a sip of coffee from your disposable cup. The small office was filled with the scent of cigars as one hung from the man's lips. He sat across from you, one leg bouncing lightly as he read over some papers detailing your role in the investigation and how it connected to him.

Instead of wearing the usual uniform like his colleagues, he wore a very well fitted white button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. The first couple buttons were undone, revealing part of his muscular chest. You could hear something clinking against his belt with every shake of his leg and the small tap of his black dress shoe hitting the laminate flooring.

You almost laughed when you first entered the office and saw him with the cigar, a perfectly placed no smoking sign hanging on the wall directly behind him. But his stern stare told you that wouldn't be a good idea. You glanced up at him as he continued to silently look over the papers he held in a gloved hand. He'd only given you short, clipped responses since you walked into his office and it wasn't hard to see what Garp meant when he said the man was an ass.

But he never told you that Captain Smoker was a hot ass. You could tell he was older than you but it wasn't because of the snow white, slicked back hair, though the color looked amazing on him. No, it had more to do with how he held himself, he'd been in the force for a while and it was obvious. His rank was a dead giveaway, along with the scar that started at his hairline in the middle of his forehead and trailed down over and past his right eye.

Smoker took a deep breath before letting out another puff of smoke and putting the papers down. His chocolate brown eyes met your (e/c) ones as he leaned back more comfortably in his chair and took the cigar between his fingers to speak.

"You're a little young to have so much experience under your belt." His voice had a rough edge to it but it was definitely enjoyable to listen to.

"I started my line of work early on." You took another sip of coffee. "It's what I'm good at."

"I can tell that much."

Smoker tapped at the papers. Not only did they describe your role in all this, they also listed the previous jobs you'd done, which was quite a few.

"So," He took another drag from the cigar, puffing out the whitish tendrils as he spoke. "I'll have to work with you on this case. What do you know so far?"

"Everything covered in the media along with what I gathered from yesterday's crime scene."

He grunted, averting his piercing gaze as he took a second to think. "That's about the same as us. The cannibal is messy but he's managed to make himself impossible to track despite that."

"I do have one thing to follow up on. It's small but there's a chance it could shed some light on how he got into Prim's house the other night."

He settled the cigar between his lips and waited for you to go on.

"She had an ex-boyfriend that she met up with occasionally according to her oldest brothers. There's a chance they were supposed to meet up that night. I have his info, so I think he's worth having a chat with."

"That's very circumstantial."

"Do you have something better to work off of?" You crossed your arms, slightly tilting your head and raising an eyebrow at him, positively radiating confidence and attitude.

"No." He growled.

Typical tough male cop not liking a female taking the lead.

"Then I'm going to give him a call and set up a meeting." You smiled.
