The Sewers

Instead of calling, Smoker had come by around 10 in the morning and told you Akainu had given the green light for the low profile search. Apparently he took some convincing, the man preferred getting things done with more strength than stealth. Smoker had to talk him down from sending in much of the police force and trying to catch him today.

The only reason he was able to was because you had no solid evidence that he actually was using the sewers. It was more of a hunch based on something that could be considered a coincidence. It was worth looking into, but not quite to the same degree Akainu wanted to.

So Smoker came by and took you over to your destination- the sewage entrance near Prim's house. He noticed your change in mood from the day before and didn't say much, just filling you in on how things went down with his boss and what you were okayed to do. As you passed her house, it felt a little unreal. The outside was pristine, welcoming even. But you'd seen the horrors it held inside before and weren't fooled by it.

The entrance itself was a little further down from the house, on the main road. Smoker had to park on the street and section it off from incoming traffic, though there wasn't too much in this part of town. It was a little nicer than some of the other parts of the city and had a lower population, it'd make getting in and out easier.

Before even moving the cover, you made sure you had everything you needed on you. Flashlight, phone for a camera, you really needed an actual camera for work but you could deal with that another time, and your trusty Glock 22. It wasn't an easy gun to conceal so you didn't keep it on your person very often. If you were going out on work it usually stayed in your glove compartment. Not the best place to keep it, but it was easy to get to there.

Now you had it strapped to your hip in it's custom fitted holster, for just in case of course. You didn't bother to hide it, once again, not like it would be easy. Instead it was out in plain view. Smoker noticed it but didn't say anything. You'd seen the gun he carried under his shirt, a Ruger. It was smaller than what you carried but much easier to conceal as well. As an officer who didn't seem to need to wear the uniform, that seemed like the better choice.

You helped Smoker move the heavy manhole cover to the side and clicked on your flashlight to peer down. He gave you an impressed look, probably didn't think you'd be able to move the cover but jokes on him. You do enough work to stay in shape, it's important for the job.

You almost sighed in relief when you noticed there wasn't black sludge coating the bottom of the sewer. It looked damp and there was definitely some murky water down there, but that was it. Much more tolerable than why your dream would have you think.

"We going down or what?" Smoker asked.

He'd been waiting on you.

"Yeah, just wanted to peek in first."

"Want me to go down?"

You bit your lip and shook your head. No way would you chicken out. It was just a dream, you were tougher than that. Without a second thought, you lowered yourself down and let your body drop down. Stagnant, nasty smelling water splashed up around your feet. It was about ankle high and the light you reflected against it's surface did nothing to help you see what all was in it. That was probably for the better.

As soon as you moved to the side, Smoker landed beside you. He had dressed similarly to you for the occasion with jeans and a ragged shirt that hugged his frame. It shouldn't have looked as good as it did but you didn't doubt he could make just about anything look good.

His own flashlight hung out of his mouth, along with his usual cigar, as he slipped on a pair of latex gloves and offered you a pair. It was the one thing you forgot to bring. At least he didn't.
