STILL FLASHBACK:
“Even in the familiar there can be surprise and wonder.” ~ Tierney Gearon
I pondered about Anushka for a while but I couldn’t understand what was going on with her.
I reached home in an hour. My parents were out of town. Nikhil was in the US studying law. I had the whole house to myself. Our maid had prepared dinner for me and left. It was past 7. I decided to have an early dinner. I heated the food and plopped myself in front of the television. I was flicking through the channels. Finally, I settled on a music channel. I blindly watched the upcoming movie trailers.
My mind was possessed by just one thought. This was the third time I had seen Akash. Would we always keep seeing each other like this? Why did I like him so much? I was obsessing over him like a crazy girl. I finished my dinner and couldn’t help but feel elated. He remembered me and that was all I could think about.
I put on some music and cleaned up the kitchen while dancing to it. Just then the doorbell rang. Lowering the volume, I opened the door to Anushka. Her mother was standing behind her.
“Hope there will be discipline. Just because you’re in college doesn’t mean you have these impromptu sleepovers,” her mother sternly scolded her. I looked at Anushka. There was never a plan to have a sleepover. Anushka gave me a look that said I should go along with what her mother is saying.
“Sorry aunty. Won’t happen again,” I replied. She mellowed down now. “Have fun,” she departed smiling. Anushka came in as I shut the door.
“Please enlighten me,” I said patiently.
“Yourbrotheraskedmeout,” she said speedily. She was incomprehensive.
“Come again,” I said.
“Gaurav asked me out,” she said softly. I whistled. This was so unexpected. Now that I thought of it he was hanging around the house often. And he was always nice to her. Understanding dawned upon me.
“And the problem is?” I asked.
She looked surprised. She was reviewing my behaviour.
“You don’t like him?” I asked. This was amusing. She had taken in all the attention gracefully. I had been so blind. Why did it never occur to me? She liked him and he her.
A blush crept up to her cheeks. “It’s not that,” she said gently.
I smiled. She was scared of me. Of what I would say.
“Then? You said yes?” I asked now, having fun at her expense.
She turned around. She was stumped by my casual attitude.
“How are you okay with this?” she asked turning around.
I laughed now. Poor thing was so worried. “I love you, Anushka and I don’t care who you date. Even, if it’s Gaurav.”
She hugged me tightly. “Thank you,” she said.
“On one condition though,” I replied.
“What is that?” she asked apprehensively.
“This time around I do not want the details,” I said scrunching up my face.
She laughed now. “Awww who will I tell all the gory details to?”
I scrunched up my face even more. Laughingly she said,” I want the phone now.”
“Why?” I asked.
“I have to say yes to somebody,” she said happily. She looked so delighted.
I shook my head. I was really happy for her. “I thought this was a sleepover,” I teased her.
“Give me 10 minutes,” she said pleadingly.
College, 16, and a new boyfriend, Anushka was surely having the time of her life.
