I danced to the beats of the song while singing it out loudly. I admit I wasn’t the best singer in the world but nothing could rain on my parade right now. Nikhil had left a couple of weeks ago. I was dating Akash for about a month now. He was truly my special guy. Movies, long walks, elegant dinners, casual subs defined my time with him. He was a great guy. I was on cloud nine. I was smiling all the time and thinking about how it all finally worked out with him. He was one of the sweetest persons I had ever met. Today was a Saturday and date night with Akash and I was ironing a t-shirt of mine while dancing to The Wanted’s hit number.
I heard the door shut outside and guessed that Anushka and Gaurav had returned from their shopping trip. I didn’t bother going out. I kept dancing for a while. I finished ironing and switched off the iron. I held the shirt up and held it up to see how I looked in the mirror. As I looked at myself, I saw Jai leaning against the door and hiding a smile. I dropped the shirt down and turned around giving him a glare.
“Are you crazy?” I asked with fright.
He started laughing now. I waited for my heart rate to come back to normal. Who comes inside somebody’s room and stands there watching them? Without telling them they have arrived? So creepy! And I was dancing. Did he see me dancing? Oh God! This was so embarrassing. Why oh why? Why did I not check when I heard the door shut? Why did I assume it would be Gaurav and Anushka? I slowly picked up my shirt from the floor and laid it on my bed. Jai’s laughter had subsided by then.
“Why wouldn’t you announce your arrival?” I asked with half-irritation and half-embarrassment.
“I just came in to say hi but you were between that routine so I decided not to disturb you,” he said with a smirk.
“Gentleman no you are?” I asked sarcastically. What was with not disturbing me? He was born to disturb me. Disturb my mental state. Infuriate me.
“Totally,” he said with a sly grin.
“You know you are a waste of time right?” I said. I was still very embarrassed. If there were some way, some power, I would take back the last half an hour.
He shrugged. “Spend one evening with me and you will change your opinion,” he winked.
“Don’t wink,” I scowled. He laughed.
“Anybody home?” I heard Anushka yell out from the hall. Thank god. Another minute of Jai and I would have killed him. I left him in my room and went out to the hall to see Anushka with two bags from Zara.
“Just two bags?” I asked slightly disappointed. Anushka had potential. She could shop till she dropped. Usually she had close to ten bags after a day’s shopping. Just then I saw Gaurav entering the house with his hands full of bags.
I laughed. “Never,” said Anushka as if I had insulted her.
“Sorry for underestimating you Miss Shopaholic,” I said as I offered to help Gaurav. After helping us, Jai sat on the couch silently observing everybody. As Gaurav and Anushka went to freshen up, I looked at Jai. He looked tired even though he tried his best not to show it. He was always the fun guy around me. He never showed me his serious side.
