Christmas Eve
After having made it through the crowded streets of New York, a manhole, and the sewers without having dropped anything, it was a bit frustrating to have Mikey bear hug me out of nowhere causing some gifts to fall. Leo's action figure slid out its bag and I made Mikey swear he wouldn't tell until the day after. I didn't trust him.
Master Splinter greeted me warmly and offered some tea, even after months of having to force it down, I still didn't have it in me to tell him I hated tea. Today's, however, was peppermint and warm, and while still gross, not as repulsive. I sat next to him on the couch and smiled noticing he was wearing the scarf and blanket I'd gotten him at the start of winter and he asked me about my plans for tonight.
We waited for the guy's to gather, the smell of pizza and brownies and cookies permeating the lair. Mikey went to go get Raph and Leo came from the dojo in an adorable baby blue scarf. I couldn't find anything deeper in blue, but he seemed to like it all the same. Raph and Mikey similarly came out in layers and we waited for Donnie chatting easily. Raph and Mikey eyed their gifts, not just mine, but each other's and Splinter poked them with his tail if they got too close.
"What's taking Donnie so long?" Raph whined. We had Home Alone set up and waiting.
"He's still working on you-know-what," Leo said, his face nonchalant in all ways that meant he wasn't.
"Still? God, it's been weeks, months! He's done bigger better things in half that time," Raph slumped into his bean bag.
"Yeah, the pizza's getting cold! I'm only waiting because it's Christmas, and I need some late bonus points for Santa. Especially after breaking Leo's door and blaming it on Donnie."
"Mikey, we all knew it was you," I said, laughing at how guilty he looked.
"No, I blamed Donnie, and karma is coming for me." He stared sardonically at the pizza but kept his hands to himself while we waited for Donnie.
"Y/n, would you mind fetching Donatello?" Splinter asked. I nodded and started toward the lab. I knocked and heard no response, though sounds of paper and slicing could definitely be heard.
I suspected I was the recipient of whatever he'd been making, and therefore I shouldn't be the one to walk in on him but...If Splinter insisted then... I opened and shut the door behind me. He was hunched over, shiny purple wrapping paper all over the floor, the chair, his desk. A bunch of it crumpled and thrown off in different corners of the lab.
I smiled and watched his form, I hadn't been able to see him as often these past few weeks, with finals and part-time work and him seemingly busy.
I walked over and right as I stood behind him, I shut my eyes. My arms snaked around his neck and I leaned my head against his right shoulder. "Donnie," I sighed. "We're waiting for you."
"D-DOn't look!!" he spasmed and threw his arms over whatever he'd been trying to wrap.
"I'm not. I wanna be surprised," I giggled at how desperate he sounded.
"I-I'll be out in a sec...," he said softly, his hand stroking my arm closest to his chest.
"The pizza's getting cold and I have to leave before 6 to go to my family's party. Can't you finish later tonight?"
"Oh, you're not staying?... Of course, sorry, I forgot." He stood and turned me around and walked me out of the lab, not letting me open my eyes until we were outside.
"Donnie! Dude! Finally! The pizza is ALMOST cold," Mikey whined, but still smiled at him as we sat next to him.
"Sorry..." Donnie said awkwardly. He reached over and grabbed a brownie and Raph started the movie.
We ate and ate and I, mid-reach, I suddenly realized that eating another full course meal at home was going to be a major issue soon. I retreated my arm and instead coiled it around Donnie's. The movie was almost over and I could tell Donnie enjoyed it a lot. Kevin was a strange combination of all four of the brothers I thought. He definitely had Donnie's inventiveness, Mikey's trickster nature, Raph's protectiveness, and Leo's resolve. This was a staple of the Christmas marathon and I didn't want to leave. I sighed. I had about twenty minutes left.
Donnie squeezed my hand and I turned to look at him. He smiled and turned his attention back to the movie, and for some reason, it made me blush.
