Chapter 28
Williams was waiting in a room near the hangar in Fort West, New York. She had been informed that they may have found her sister deep in Kandahar, Afghanistan and there was a possibility that she may still be alive. She already knew about this through Simon. He had woken her up the night before to inform her that he had been invited to participate in the rescue mission. She could not sleep afterward. She stayed in bed crying until someone from Fort West had phoned her in the evening. There she stood now, by herself, awaiting the arrival of her fiancé and her sister which was taken away from her more than a year before.
A man dressed in a Navy uniform approached her. He had the SEALs broche pinned on his chest.
"Ms. Williams, I am Commander Jefferson," he started.
Williams simply nodded in reply. Her eyes were so puffed up that she could barely see the Commander who stood a few feet away from her.
"I was in charge of the operation who located Colonel Tamara Williams."
"Oh. I thank you for your work Commander."
"It is my job after all," he said, smiling slightly. "They will be arriving in a few minutes. If you need anything at all, don't hesitate to tell me."
He explained that after they found her, she needed to be fed, groomed and checked for any illnesses. The main cause was mainly malnutrition. However, he made it clear that she needed to be questioned for obvious reasons. She nodded. Despite not approving of this, she understood the commander well. They need to see what her sister had learned during her capture and also to see if she had been compromised in any way.
He stood behind her and did not leave her side. Williams could see the Chinook land on the runway through the glass walls. Her heart was beating hard and she swallowed hard. Her hands started sweating and took deep breaths to try to calm herself down. The ramp started lowering itself and saw soldiers with black ACUs leaving the Chinook with huge duffle bags on their backs. When the soldiers cleared, she could still see someone wearing all black who stayed behind. Williams recognized Simon who was helping a dark-skinned woman wearing the Marine uniform get out of the Chinook.
Williams had only eyes for her sister who was limping alongside Simon. Tears welled up in her eyes as they entered the room.
"Tammy!" she cried.
They embraced and felt they were crushing each other but it was okay. They broke apart only to hug each other again and again.
"Let me look at you," said Tamara, beaming.
She looked at her sister with admiration and pride. She never believed that she was going to meet her again after being locked up and forced to work for the enemy. She shook away the horrible thoughts and concentrated on Charlene.
"I never thought I'd see you again," said Charlene, tears streaming down her face.
"Oh, come on darling. You know I am a hard woman to eliminate."
"That I have no doubt," said Simon, smiling.
"I am sorry to interrupt ladies," interjected Commander Jefferson. "Colonel, you know the procedure."
Charlene looked crestfallen as they were about to take her sister away from her again. Simon jumped in.
"Commander, why don't you give Colonel Williams at least twelve hours to catch up. After all, they have been away from each other for more than a year."
