Chapter 33

1 month later...

Charlene was reading a book as she lied down on the sofa. A TV show sounded in the background. She had spent over a month alone at home. Luckily, she managed to find a job as a health care assistant. Unfortunately, she could not apply for a doctor position or even a nurse due to her lack of a medical degree. Furthermore, it was against the law to assist someone out of the military parameters in spite of being a certified medic. She had to become familiar with washing patients, toileting, making beds and serve meals.

The bell rang and she jumped from the sofa to open the door. She had been terribly lonely without Simon. At least their neighbors were friendly and they have been inviting her over for dinners. Still, she felt secluded and deserted; she missed her colleagues and friends. She missed her old family. She opened the door and gasped.

"Surprise!"

"Simon!" she yelled and jumped on him.

"Bloody hell love," he laughed as he tried to hold her and his duffle bag simultaneously.

"You're back! And you're safe!" she cheered expressing a sigh of relief.

He wobbled inside and closed the door with his leg.

She kissed him all over his face and could not stop grinning.

"Shall I make you something to eat?"

"Just a sandwich sweetheart. In the meantime, I'll go upstairs and change."

"I am so happy!" she yelled, cheering. "By the way guess who will be visiting in the next few days?"

"Who?"

"John and Lisa!"

Simon stopped in his tracks and spun around.

"Wait... how?"

"They got back together," she continued. "John has been called for duty and he's coming to the base here."

Simon looked pensive. MacTavish called back to Credenhill? If it was related to Ecuador, it meant that the situation was worse than they thought even with all the intel they had gathered.

"I'm happy for them," he shouted as he went up the stairs.

He sighed as he rested his duffle bag in the bedroom and continued to the bathroom. He went to wash his hands when something caught his eye. On the cabinet next to the sink he noticed a pregnancy stick.

"What the hell..."

His mouth was gaping open, not knowing what to think. He grabbed it and dashed downstairs.

"Umm, Charlene?" he called out.

"What is it, hun-?"

She stopped in her tracks and her wide eyes gazed at him.

"What's this?"

She kept staring at him and half-shrugged.

"It's a -"

"I know what it is!" he interrupted.

An awkward silence settled in the room.

"So are you telling me...?" he asked, his mouth curling upwards.
