I sat in deep thought as I took another sip of my coffee. I had only an hour before it was time for me to head to work. My daughter Kaila (pronounced Ky-lah) came trudging downstairs.

"Mom, I need help." She said.

Sitting my coffee down, "What can I help you with?"

"Okay brown or black?" She asked holding up two pairs of boots.

"Brown."

She looked at the shoes in her hands, "Yeah, I'll do the black." She said running back upstairs.

I shook my head, "What's the point of asking if you don't listen?"

"Just for confirmation." Kenny said hi-fiving her as he came downstairs.

"Good morning handsome." I said as he pecked my lips.

"Good morning beautiful. Where's breakfast?"

"I'm sorry I must've missed it in the midst of ironing your shirts, making your lunch, and giving fashion advice that no one listens to." I said handing his shirt to him.

"I'm sorry baby. I'll stop on the way."

Kaila came back down with her backpack on, "Okay, I'm out."

"Kaila, text me as soon as you get there." I told her.

"I know mom, love you both, bye."

She disappeared out of the door as I shook my head.

"Can you believe she'll a teenager in a couple weeks?" I asked Ken.

He nodded, "Yeah, time flies. Speaking of which, my father called."

"Why?"

"Well my cousin Laz is getting married and also because he wants to do Kaila's birthday dinner at the house."

"Ken, I don't know about that." I said tucking my hair behind my ear.

"It'll be fun. Think about it, we'll take a ferry to the house, we can stay in my old room, we'll do some golfing and maybe do the dinner on the yacht. Kaila would love that and she'll love to see her grandparents."

"I'll think about it." I said. He sighed as he poured coffee into his thermos. I looked at him, "What?"

He shrugged, "It just feels like you never want her around them. You know they are her family too. I have no problem with her spending time with your side."
