Kenny"Where have you been?" Dawn asked me after I returned to the guesthouse an hour later.
I huffed as I started pacing,"Walking. Can you believe her? Why would she make something like that up?"
"What makes you think she made it up?" Dawn asked.
I looked at her, "I know my dad! You know him, he'd never do that!" I protested as I started pacing again. It became a little too quiet making me stop,"Why aren't you saying anything?" I asked.
She always had something to say, advice to give, anything!
"What do you want me to say?"
"He'd never do that, he's a good person."
She sat down on the couch,"Kenny, you don't know him."
"What the hell does that mean?" I asked with my face scrunched up.
"I believe her...because it happened to me too." She said lowly as a tear slipped down her cheek.
"What?"
"When I was about sixteen I stayed here one summer because I loved being out here with my Aunt Lucinda. Your dad always bought me things and I thought it was nice of him. Until one night he told me I going to have to pay for that stuff. I thought he meant work but he meant other ways. I remember crying a lot because it hurt and I just wanted to die." She said.
I sat down on the coffee table in front of her,"Did you tell my mom?"
"Yeah. She said she wasn't going to let me ruin what she had. A few weeks later I found out I was pregnant. I didn't want it at all but Lucinda made me keep it. She practically held me hostage here and told my mom that I wanted to live with her."
"What happened when you gave birth?" I asked in complete shock. It was like we experienced two different sets of people.
She looked up at me,"I saw how much my baby boy looked like me and I wanted him. Lucinda said no and she took him. She sent me off to boarding school, college, and then law school to keep me quiet and far away. That was 40 years ago." She said getting up an walking towards the mini bar.
"Where's the baby now?"
"Closer than you think."
I frowned in deep thought, "Well Laz is 32 and Chris is 37...But I just turned 40."
"And Lucinda can't have children." She said downing her whiskey. I looked at her hoping she wasn't saying what I think. She looked at me, "Kenny-"
"No. No, no, no. Dawn tell me this is a sick joke." I asked backing away from her.
"It's not. I'm your mother." She admitted. Putting it all together, I let out a breath. She grabbed my hand,"Kenny-"
I snatched away from her, "Don't. All these years you've been lying to me. Everyone has been lying to me!" I said as I started pacing again.
Dawn, my best friend, my cousin, my mother?! My entire life is a lie and now I'm related to a sick pervert.
"I'm sorry you had to find out this way but you needed to hear it from me." She said. She shook off her emotions and put her tough facade back on, "Look, I know your wife is telling the truth. You know that too. She's hurting and she needs you."
