You looked out of the frosty window miserably. Today you and your girlfriend were supposed to go out on a date to the local carnival but because of the snow you were shut inside. The two of you hadn't been able to spend a lot of time together because she had been on tour for months. It was the first time you had seen her in over 3 months. Yesterday you spent all day watching movies and singing songs together, just like you had missed.
"Don't worry Y/N. Maybe another time," Mariah whispered.
"But you're leaving in three days. And the carnival doesn't open up again until Thursday. It's Sunday," You recounted, barely a whisper, trying hard not to break down in tears.
You had everything figured out, or at least you thought. Going to this specific carnival was an annual tradition for the two of you, even when you guys were only friends. The tradition started 6 years ago, and you hadn't broken it since. You didn't want to break it now, but you basically had no other choice.
"I- I know, I'm sorry," Mariah bit her lip. You still looked out the window, tears stinging your eyes. But you heard the hurt in her voice. She wasn't happy either. She was only home for three more days. There was no use crying about it. You had to make the most of this. You got up and and dusted yourself off.
"Are you okay?" She asked softly, approaching you.
"I'm more than okay," You nodded, smiling.
"What? Why?" She quirked an eyebrow.
"Because you're here," You grinned, giving her a quick peck on the lips. She just smiled at you.
"What are we gonna do?" She got excited, bouncing up and down.
"I have no idea. Maybe we can see if anyone can come over. Even though we're shut in and everything," You picked up your phone.
You called every number on your phone, seeing if anyone was able to come through any roads while Mariah snacked on a bag of chips. There was no hope.
"I'm sorry," You apologised, putting your phone down.
"It's okay!" She exclaimed, offering you a chip. You declined politely.
"Another movie?" You sighed.
"Didn't we watch them all yesterday?" She crinkled her nose, collapsing on the couch.
"I wouldn't be surprised," You scoffed. "My eyes are basically square,"
She laughed at your joke. That's what you missed. Her laugh. It never failed to make you smile.
"What are you in the mood for?" You opened up Netflix.
"I'm in the mood to play tag," She crossed her arms.
"What?" You looked at her.
"You heard me," She got closer to you. "Tag, you're it!" She giggled, running away. You dropped the TV remote on the couch and chased her, though you weren't sure where she had gone. The house was practically silent. You hated being scared, so you were extra cautious of where you stepped and if she was going to scare you, listening for any noise possible.
"Ri Ri..." you cooed, using the nickname she never liked you using. There was no response. You looked around, spotting a Nerf Gun sitting on top of a shelf. Perfect.
You grabbed it and made sure it was loaded.
You tiptoed around, keeping the fake gun close to your chest.
You heard shuffling of carpet and realised she must be in the front room. You sneaked there as quick yet quiet as you could.
You peered around the side of the wall, to see Mariah crouching as much as she could, hiding something behind her back. You took the opportunity to jump out at her, firing the nerf bullets in her direction. You yelled in victory, until you felt something sting your cheek.
Bullets were being fired your way. She had the same idea, holding another Nerf Gun in her hands. "Hey no fair!" You complained.
"You did the same!" Mariah protested.
"I call a draw then," You shrugged.
"But you never tagged me," Mariah said, quickly running past you. You followed her weaving through the house. Almost slipping on multiple occasions, up the stairs, down the stairs, around the corner, through doors.
She struggled to open a door which allowed you to catch up to her. You grabbed her in your arms, clutching her close to you, making sure you had got her for sure. You were both laughing uncontrollably. Once the laughter died down, she shuffled so she could face you. She looked into your eyes, before slowly leaning in. But before she could do anything, you ran away.
"You bitch!" She exclaimed, chasing after you.
"You gotta do what you gotta do to win!" You called out.
This game continued for a long time, you didn't even realise the sun come out and start to melt all of the snow outside. You both collapsed on the couch, out of breath from the game you had just played.
You checked your phone, to see a notification.
"Oh my gosh, Mariah," Your eyes widened.
"What?" She asked, alarmed.
"They're opening the carnival tonight because the snow is melting," Your face lit up.
"No way. When?" She smiled instantly.
"6pm," You grinned.
"Then you know what we're doing tonight," She got up, and reached out her hand so she could help you up. She put an arm around your waist, not letting go of your hand with her other hand, and kissed you passionately. You smiled into the kiss, knowing exactly what this was for.
"That was the kiss that got so rudely rejected,"
