Lourdes shook me awake when we had to go. I sleepily packed some of our belongings into my bag and Lourdes got the other supplies. I slipped in a black tank top and my jeans and boots. I also had half of a friendship necklace from Lourdes that she gave me when I arrived. We both wore our half as a good luck charm. Anne had to change my bandage and check that my scar wasn't infected but after that we went to the eating area for a quick breakfast then we had to leave.
'How are you feeling Emma?' Weaver asked.
'Fine I can help with whatever you need,' I hastily replied.
'She can't do anything too energetic otherwise she might stretch the stitches,' Anne said.
'I'm not exactly planning on doing a marathon or anything but I should be fine to walk,' I assured.
Tom raised his eyebrows and looked at me, 'No chance Emma. You are going to ride in the ute with Uncle Scott'.
I knew he was trying to be nice but I wanted to help. I didn't want to be the helpless kid who they have to care for.
'No it's fine. I want to be with Lourdes and Anne. I can help'.
'Emma please we want you to be safe. The way you felt with that Skitter. You killed it, if we train you a bit you might be able to help with the fighting,' Tom said.
Lourdes and Anne looked shocked. I didn't want to fight. I wanted to be with them. They were like family and I couldn't be away fighting instead of helping the wounded.
'Tom I appreciate the offer and all, really I do, but won't some of the soldiers hate having the spike girl fighting beside them. Anyway if I feint every time I get a bullet in a Skitter I won't be much help,' I said.
Weaver and Tom knew that meant I didn't want to do it. I looked at my oatmeal and slushed it around with my spoon.
'Well if that's what you want to do Emma we are not going to stop you. But anyway we need to train some civilians with basic fighting skills so they have a chance of surviving if this situation happens again,' Weaver said.
Lourdes smiled at me and walked off to pray. She was still very faithful and believed that God was making this happen to us for a reason. My parents were Christian but I didn't believe in God.
Weaver got up on the table, his combat boots caked with Skitter blood and wet soil.
'All right pack up and get going. We are going now. Gather your belonging and come here then we are going to leave,' he yelled.
The second mass grumbled and got up, grabbing backpacks and anything that they could put their limited belongings into. Lourdes and I were ready so when she finished praying we stood up the front tending to minor injuries before we left. Uncle Scott and Larry were up front fixing the engine on the old Ute (sorry I just realised that in America a Ute is called a pickup truck or something sorry I'm Australian so that is what we say). It may sound weird being in an alien apocalypse and being bored but I was. I found a pinecone e and started kicking it. With one huge kick it went flying into a bush. I ran after it, seeing not only the pinecone but also a quick glimpse of something hiding in the bush. I curiously moved the bush away and pointed my gun out and a soccer ball bounce out. My heart rate slowed and I grabbed the ball for the kids in the Second Mass. They have bad it the most tough, the kids, and this might lighten the mood. I walked out of the bush and Lourdes rushed up to me.
'I thought a Skitter got you. Jeez Emma what were you doing,' she asked.
'Chill Lourdes I just got a ball for the kids. Where is Matt?' I asked.
'He's with Uncle Scott,' she said.
I ran up to the truck and passes Matt the ball. His grin was massive and he gave me a huge hug.
'Thanks Emma.' He said.
I ruffled his curly hair and walked back to Lourdes. Watching him and the other kids kick it around.
'All right guys we need to get moving. Hal scouted on the bikes and there is a large group headed this way. We have about an hour before they reach here so let's go,' Weaver said.
Everyone grumbled and started to walk. They hated it, not being able to stay in a good place for long. I guess that it will be hard to adjust when, or if we win the war
