We walked forwards to Karen and Hal. Lourdes unsurprisingly walked more towards Hal than Karen.
'So these are loaded and ready to go. Anne you wanna go first considering you had a little fun not knowing this stuff yesterday?' Hal asked.
'Sure,' she smiled.
Anne picked up a rifle to start with. Hal got her to shoot each of the eight targets. She got three out of them which was pretty good considering she had never fired a gun before. She tried a couple of guns before it was Lourdes' go and she did a little better getting five, but I assumed she had most of her motivation from Hal watching her.
'Emma take a turn,' Karen said.
I walked up to the target and took the gun Hal was holding out. I took a deep breathe and thought. I thought of the moment when a Mech killed my family, I remembered that this is our home, the aliens have no right to be here. I heard eight deafening shots and I shakily opened my eyes. There was a small hole in each styrofoam Skitter head. I laughed. Karen and Hal smiled at each other.
'Well done solider, I think you have a talent,' Hal grinned.
'We could really use you,' Karen agreed.
'I don't think I would fit the role,' I said sheepishly.
Karen and Hal raised their eyebrows, 'Fair enough, it's your own decision'.
We moved on to the obstacle course. It was basically a crawl through a chicken wire tunnel and a hurdle like thing and finally we had climb a tree to collect a flag. It was way harder than it sounds but Anne did it in eight minutes (she had some trouble in the tree). Lourdes did it in seven and a half and when it was my turn I thought again. I breathed and sprinted to the five metres of crawling under the chicken wire. I sprinted on to the hurdle and jumped over each hurdle with ease. I ran to the tree and climbed onto it in seconds, grabbing the flag and jumping down. I sprinted back to the others.
'How'd I do?' I asked.
Hal laughed, 'Insanely good. As in not human, as in you are freaking awesome'.
'As in your time was one minute,' Karen explained.
'I did not know I could do that,' I laughed.
'I think this calls for a celebratory drink. I found a bottle of champagne and we could crack it open,' Anne smiled.
'Not yet soldiers. I need you to do ten laps of the oval to increase your endurance and then you are dismissed,' Hal said.
Lourdes groaned, she hates running. Though we still set off into a fast jog. Anne was pretty good at running and Lourdes has gotten much better but I was far ahead. I was horrible at running pre-invasion but now I was awesome and I didn't even slow down, I kept the same pace. Anne and Lourdes were pretty good and they didn't stop but they had to slow down a bit. Everyone congratulated me when I finished and then we left to check up on Michael and open the bottle of Champagne.
