Chapter 11

I woke up at six like usual and walked around looking for clothes. Ben would be up today so I figured I wanted to look good. Anne was already up and she woke Lourdes.
Lourdes stretched, 'Morning. Your seventeen girl pick some nice clothes'.
I smiled, 'I'll do my best'.
In the circumstances it is hard to find good clothes but I pulled out a cute pair of jeans, my usual combat boots, a black singlet and a black leather jacket. Lourdes had jeans and a denim top and Anne had jeans and a purple sweater. We walked out into the food court where all the Masons were sitting at a table.
'Happy birthday Emma,' Hal smiled.
Ben was sitting down eating every scrap of oatmeal. He was like an eating machine as he savoured it but I guessed the Skitters didn't feed him. He looked really cute in a simple black tee. I sat down next to him.
'Ben this is Emma,' Tom introduced, 'She helped rescue you, she was harnessed as well'.
Ben looked up from his bowl and he stared into my eyes for a few seconds.
Ben out his hand out, 'Ben Mason'.
I shook it, 'I'm Emma Green, nice to meet you'.
'So do you like manga?' Ben asked raising his eyebrows.
'Um I like DC more but I guess it's pretty cool,' I shrugged.
'Superman is the best,' Mat butted in.
'No chance Matt, Flash is way cooler, and Green Arrow and Batman,' Ben sighed, it sounded like they had this conversation before.
'How is Flash better than Superman?' Matt questioned.
'All right boys that's enough,' Tom interrupted, 'Ben you haven't met Lourdes or Anne yet come on Anne was the one who took your harness off'.
'Hi I'm Anne Glass,' Anne said.
'Ben, thanks for taking the harness off,' he smiled then turned to Lourdes, 'And you are'.
'Lourdes Delagado,' she grinned.
'Well this is a big happy family huh,' Ben grinned, my stomach turned over.
Captain Weaver went up to the front and did his daily talk.
'Good morning. Today we have Emma Greens seventeenth birthday and the arrival of Ben Mason. Could you two please stand,' he said.
We did and I snuck another look at Ben, he was just too cute. He was grinning at everyone and I did the same. We a gesture of Weavers hand we sat down.
'So Emma your seventeen,' Ben asked.
'Don't get any ideas Benjy she's three years older than you,' Hal smirked.
'Hey no I'm fifteen in nearly under month,' he argued.
'Whatever you say loverboy,' Hal mumbled.
'Like you can talk, you and Karen were getting pretty friendly when I walked in,' Ben said.
Hal and Karen turned red.
'Eh we'll probably die soon so YOLO dude,' Hal said.
I laughed.
'What you laughing about Green?' Hal asked, 'I think someone needs a tickle'.
'No please don't,' I moaned. One time he kinda did it to far and I may or may not have wet my pants.
'Hal leave her,' Tom ordered, 'Time for presents'.
'You didn't,' I said rolling my eyes.
'Hell yeah we did Green, no chance we'd get you nothing,' Hal said.
They all pulled out a present. Lourdes went first, she pulled out a makeup bag. I opened it and surprise surprise makeup was inside.
'Thanks Lourdes,' I grinned.
'We are so having a makeover,' She laughed.
'Are you saying I'm ugly?' I joked.
'Your not ugly Emma,' Ben said.
I blushed, 'Thanks Ben at least someone is nice,' I said poking my tongue out.
Anne pulled out a massive box of chocolate, 'Now I don't owe you'.
'Thank you Anne,' I grinned hugging her.
Tom brought a leather backed book out, it was A Tale Of Two Cities.
'It's one of my favourites,' He explained.
'Probably gonna be one of mine when I finish,' I smiled.
Karen and Hal went next.
'We found an old push bike, it's out front and yours ' They said.
'Wow thanks the Medics can be like the ambulance then,' I joked.
'Not actually the worst idea,' Anne said.
Dai brought out a beautiful rifle, 'You showed us that you know how to shoot yesterday by saving our sorry asses'.
'She's beautiful,' I murmured taking the gun in my hands.
Anthony gave me pile of cool clothes, Jimmy gave me a toiletries bag stocked full (he turned red when I kissed him on the cheek), Matt gave me a teddy bear and Weaver gave me a pair of Black Chucks.
'I didn't get you anything,' Ben moaned looking at the ground.
'Oh that's fine Ben I don't expect you to considering you literally just figured out,' I blushed.
'Actually no I have this,' he said pulling out a manga comic and iPod nano and earphones.
'Oh no that's to much Ben, keep it please,' I said.
'No take it'.
'Fine,' I sighed.
I pocketed the items.
'So Ben you want a tour, Emma can you take him?' Tom asked.
'Sure I just need to drop this stuff off,' I said.
'It's fine I don't mind,' Ben smiled.
'You sure'.
'Yeah it's good'.
'Ok let's go,' I shrugged.
We waved goodbye to everyone at the table and walked to my room. Ben carried most of the load, though the harness effects made it feel really light. We walked in the room and closed the door. My heart beat faster than if there were a Skitter in the room to instead of Ben. He dumped the stuff on my bed.
'Do you mind it's really hot?' I asked gesturing to my jacket.
'Oh nah it's fine,' Ben said.
I slipped of the leather jacket and my body temperature lowered.
'Cool tat, it's a lily right?' Ben said pointing to my arm.
'Huh oh yeah. One of my best friends, Lily Peterson, got lung cancer and she died, I got this as a kinda memorial thing,' I said, a tear in the corner of my eye.
Ben hugged me, 'Oh poor Emma'.
'Well on the bright she wasn't here to witness the invasion,' I smiled.
'Yeah I guess,' Ben shrugged.
'Hey I feel your pain. For a long time it was really weird after I was harnessed. Everyone teased me, said I was a freak, all that crap. I wouldn't talk for a day. It doesn't feel good, having them control you'.
'Emma your not a freak,' Ben said blushing, 'In fact I find you quite attractive'.
'You are pretty cute but I think you need a haircut,' I smiled.
'Everyone says that. I will though, don't worry,' Ben said.
'I'll do it sometime if you like. My favourite aunt used to be a hairdresser so I learnt a bit from her,' I promised.
'Ok cool, tomorrow good for you?' Ben asked.
'Sooner than I expected but that's fine,' I laughed.
Ben moved a lock of my black hair, 'Emma you are wonderful and I'd like to spend as much time with you'.
I blushed, 'Oh wow, and this ain't a joke'.
'Hell no love isn't a joke'.
'So, so you love me?' I mumbled.
'I wouldn't be human if I didn't, your pretty, nice, smart'.
'Shut up and kiss me,' I whispered into his ear.
Ben looked taken aback. He leaned his gorgeous head forward into mine and kissed me. His breath tasted of peppermint toothpaste and oatmeal. His hands were sweaty and cold. His lips were warm and soft and Ben kissed like he had lots of practise. I placed my hands around his neck. I hadn't really kissed much, I mean I had the occasional random kiss from guys at parties and I had a boyfriend for a while but nothing like this, it felt, right. Maybe it was just stupid but I think kissing feels different with 'the one' to randoms.
We sadly stopped due to lack of breathing. We stood panting on the floor.
'You done that a lot?' I asked.
'First time'.
'Kissing Virgin eh. You ever had a girlfriend'.
'Nope'.
'Well I guess you do now'.
'Hey Emma, you need to know, I really like you. I mean never doubt it. Us Razorbacks gotta stick together'.
'Sure Tiger, so you wanna do this tour thing or not'.
'Yeah sure, let's go'.
I took my hand in his and walked out the door. I showed his the whole school from the armoury to the kitchen. Finally we stopped on the oval.
'Emma watch out,' Matt yelled.
An unknown object went flying to me, with force enough to seriously damage me.
