We walked for five days. Stopping for the night in whatever place that we found. Finally we found a school that seemed to be clear of any Skitter traces so we made that our new camp. Lourdes, Anne and I had a small room for sleeping next to the medic room, which was a chemistry lab which was perfect and big for the job. Everyone really likes the school, it is big enough so that only a couple of people had to sleep in tents. We walked down to the basketball court where everyone was eating better food than normal (Uncle Scott had found heaps of food in the canteen). I savoured the canned peaches and had a small cup of coffee, the things we take for granted. Hal and Karen had came back from scouting the area and had heaps to eat.
'So Hal did you see any Skitters or anything,' Lourdes asked.
'Yeah well there was this one that found us but Karen saved me,' Hal said smiling at Karen and Lourdes. Hal was very charming but he was too pretty boy for me. I thought of him more as an older brother.
'So Emma I heard how you saved Anne. Good job, have you considered becoming a solider,' Karen asked.
'Yeah but I don't think I'm cut out for it,' I smiled.
'Good job Em. How did it feel,' Hal asked.
I bit my lip, 'Weird. I mean it felt good but I think it was because I was harnessed I felt bad for it'.
Hal, Karen, Tom, Weaver and Anthony tensed. They didn't like being reminded by what I was. Anne and Lourdes couldn't care, that's what I liked about them, they were easygoing and didn't care about your past.
'Anyway Hal could you and Karen train our medics here please. If this happens again I want them ready,' Tom asked.
Hal smiled, 'Of course. If you three could go to the oval in an hour that'd be great. Oh and Dai could you please bring a rifle and that normal police gun'.
Dai nodded. I finished my peaches and moved on to the coffee cup (which was small enough to be a shot glass, though it was a small amount. I was thankful for the teachers at John F Kennedy school and their love of caffeine).
I sipped it and listened to Tom and Weaver talk strategy. At the start Tom hated Captain Weaver, they wouldn't say it but now they got on pretty well.
A man in bloody, scruffy clothes ran inside, 'Help me. Please the spider alien found me. Help'.
Anne, Lourdes and I ran to him. I got out my first aid kit and gave it to Anne. She had the most medical knowledge so she handled most serious injuries but she was training Lourdes and I to be as good as her.
Meanwhile Anne had torn the mans shirt off and was looking at he bleeding wound.
'Please there's morphine in my jacket pocket. Give it to me,' he moaned. He looked in serious pain. Anne searched in his jacket and found many syringes of morphine in his jacket.
'Where did you find this,' Anne asked.
'A hospital. Please, give them to me,' he cried.
Anne nodded and pushed it into his skin. He relaxed and Anne was able to wash it fully, stitch it up and bandage him. A couple of soldiers carried him into the chemistry lab where we placed him on a bed. He was already better and we were able to talk to him.
'What's your name?' Lourdes asked.
'I'm Michael Reeves, but is it safe here?' He asked.
Weaver laughed, 'Son it ain't safe anywhere'.
'Michael this is a very important. Did you have anyone with you or have you seen any large groups of people?' Anne asked, she was very calm and had a kinda motherly feel about her.
'No. My wife died and all I have seen is you. Oh there was this group of kids traveling with the aliens, I have photos of them in my bag,' he replied.
Weaver hit his hand on the table, 'Damn it'.
Tom curiously walked over to his bag and got out his camera. It was a flash cannon one. He looked through the photos and got to one the made him act weird. I thought I saw tears in his eyes. He showed a photo to us, it was of a boy with fair hair and a glowing harness on his back. He probably would be cute if he didn't have dirt on his face and a expressionless stare.
'This is my son Ben,' he explained.
Anne walked up to him and gave him a hug. Weaver looked at Tom and sighed.
'You can go. I know what I'd do in this situation and besides if I don't let you go you'll go anyway. I can't stop a father loving his kids,' he said.
'Thank you. Really Dan this means I might be able to save my boy. I'll take a couple of people tonight and we will get him,' Tom said.
'I don't doubt that ' he said.
Anne ushered them out of the room and told Anthony to watch him while he got some sleep. We had to leave for training. We walked through the school to a large, overgrown oval. Hal and Karen were already there, putting ammo into guns. They had set up fake Skitters and made a small obstacle course.
Karen laughed when she saw us shaking at the guns 'Alright soldiers. You ready,'.
