Pic is of Ben (with short hair, when he is harnessed he has long)

I walked into John F Kennedy school feeling like a million bucks. Anne and Lourdes were really proud of me but I could tell something was up. Just before I was going to ask what it was Anne pushed me against a locker.
'Listen no one can know this. I think you have talents like that because of the harness. It does something to up you, we picked up a spiked kid who had serious diabetes and he had nothing we we looked at his blood, nothing,' she whispered.
It made me feel bad to know it wasn't me that did all that but it cleared up a lot. Before the invasion I was a B student in sport, very average and now I was like A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.
I gulped, 'Oh right. I won't tell anyone'.
'This is serious Emma if they know they will think of you as a Skitter weapon or something and it will make them worried that they'll put the over powered spiked kids into battle,' Lourdes backed up.
'Yeah I know, I know. I promise, what about Tom though?' I asked.
Anne bit her lip, 'We'll have to keep it covered for a while. In the long run we can but definitely not now'.
'Sure'.
We slumped off into our shared room and Anne poured out the promised glass of Champagne. We drunk the delicious stuff and talked. Michael was fine and Tom was talking to him about exactly where the Hospital was. Anne, Lourdes and I sat against the wall talking.
'Did you see Hal? He was so hot wasn't he,' Lourdes moaned.
Anne and I rolled our eyes.
'Hey if you are talking about hot that Ben Mason is kinda cute. He'd need a haircut but after that he would be totally kissable,' I said.
'And Anne can have Tom. The Mason's will date the medics,' Lourdes laughed.
Anne looked at us, 'Guys you do realise he is next door'.
'So it's an alien apocalypse for gods sake. Why hide your feelings,' I said then yelled, 'Hey Tom'.
I heard his footsteps and Anne go red. He opened the door, 'Yeah'.
'Anne wants you to,' I said pausing at the to, 'Have a glass of Champagne'.
Anne looked at me in relief. I whispered into her ear, 'Don't worry, I'm not that big of a douche'.
'Hey Emma is it even legal for you to drink?' Tom asked.
'Nah I'm,' the sad thing is that with all the alien stuff going on I forgot that tomorrow was my birthday, 'Holy crap tomorrow I'm 17'
'Emma why didn't you tell us?' Anne asked.
'Coz I kinda forgot,' I said.
'Omg we should like have a massive party and have lights that attract Skitters and steal some drugs and alcohol,' Lourdes joked.
'Yeah I wanna see Weaver dance, he'll wear some funky disco clothes and have a fro. I bet he'll sing along to Funkytown,' I smiled.
We all laughed at that image.
Lourdes had a tear in her eye, 'No, No what about Dai going on stage and singing the opera in a crazy pink puffy dress'.
'And imagine Karen and Hal racing in tricycles dressed as babies instead of their motorbikes,' Anne said.
'I have a better one. Imagine you three on stage singing to One Direction and Justin Beiber,' Tom cruelly said.
Lourdes, Anne and I all said ew in sync. Matt barged into the room.
'Dad Captain Weaver wants you in the Principals office,' he said, 'And please get Ben home'.
Tom ruffled Matt's hair, 'I will, I promise'.
'Come on Matty, Lourdes and Emma will take you back to Uncle Scott,' Anne said.
'Ok,' he grinned, Matt was a very happy kid and very cute.
Lourdes and I took Matt's hand and I winked at Anne, who was alone with Tom for a few minutes before Weaver got impatient.
We led Matt through the school to a large English room which all the kids under fourteen had to learn school stuff. Matt hated it, Tom knew that, but he was a History Professor before the war so he was big in education. Uncle Scott took him in and Lourdes and I left. We walked through the hallways to a small playground. We sat on separate swings and talked.
'Seriously though, what are we doing for your birthday. What do you want?' Lourdes asked.
I laughed, 'I want, this war over, humans to not die. But I guess books are good'.
Lourdes put on a old fashioned voice, 'No darling you are going to be 17. We need something more age appropriate'.
'What like a sponge cake with a candle that says 17,' I asked.
'No like makeup and nail polish,' she sighed, 'Your hopeless Emma'.
'I'm sorry my Mum was a librarian and my Dad was an author, literacy had to be my life pre-war'.
'Any way, look what I found,' she said, and she brought a bar of mint chocolate out of her black jacket.
We split it and ate, it kinda felt like the aliens didn't exist, it felt normal.
