Niall’s POV

As soon as I ended the call with Shawn, I got into my car and sped to his apartment. I got there within ten minutes and once my car was in park, I jumped out and ran up the stairs to Shawn’s apartment door. I knocked on the door until Shawn answered.

“Are you ready?” I asked.

“Considering that I was going to go anyway, yes,” Shawn said.

I noticed that he looked really nervous. “Are you scared?”

“Yes,” Shawn said. “My family has a history of lung diseases and I’m scared that I have one.”

“You’re going to be fine, Shawn,” I said, taking his shaking hand into my own. “Now, let’s get you into the car so I can get you to the hospital, yeah?”

Shawn nodded his head, his curls bouncing as he did so.

“Alright,” I said, watching Shawn close and lock the door to his apartment before I led him down the stairs and to my car.

He got into the passenger seat as I got into the driver’s seat. Once both he and I were both buckled, I drove us to the nearest hospital, scared for Shawn.

While I was driving, I kept looking at Shawn from the corner of my eye. His brown eyes were dark with worry and I could see his lips pressed into a fine line. He looked scared and I didn’t blame him. Finally, I placed a hand on his shaking leg. I felt Shawn’s gaze lock on me.

“You’re going to be fine, I promise,” I said.

“How do you know?” Shawn asked, sounding too scared.

“Trust me, I just know,” I said.

Shawn nodded and we got out of the car and we walked into the hospital with Shawn following behind me. The way he trailed behind me reminded me of a small boy going into the hospital to see someone for the last time. I held my hand out to Shawn and he took it. After giving his tense hand a gentle squeeze, I gave him a small smile. Shawn’s worried eyes looked at me and I gently rubbed the back of his hand with my thumb. I felt him relax a bit before we walked up to the receptionist.

“Hello, what can I do for you today?” the woman smiled.

“I need to see Dr. Dolan,” Shawn said.

“About the?” the woman asked.

“Yes, Ms. Sharp,” Shawn said.

“I’ll get him right away,” Ms. Sharp said.

“Thank you,” Shawn nodded before leading me over to two chairs in the waiting room.

“You’ve come here before for the same issue?” I asked.

Shawn nodded. “It happened almost a year ago and when I went to see Mr. Dolan, he told me to come back if anything happened again. And, here we are.”

“Damn,” I said.

Shawn opened his mouth to say more until a voice interrupted him.

“Mr. Mendes?” she asked.

“Yes?” Shawn asked, standing up.

“Come with me,” the nurse said as Shawn and I followed her down the hallway. “My name is Nurse Cabello. I'm going to be your nurse today.

“Nice to meet you,” Shawn said.

Nurse Cabello smiled and led us down the hallway and into a room.

“Dr. Dolan will be in shortly but first I need you to answer a few questions,” Nurse Cabello said.

“Okay,” Shawn said, nodding his head.

“This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, correct?” Nurse Cabello asked.

“That is correct,” Shawn said.

“And your family has a history of lung diseases?” Nurse Cabello asked.

“Yeah,” Shawn said.

“Are you currently taking any medication for what happened last time?” Nurse Cabello asked.

“No,” Shawn answered.

Nurse Cabello nodded. “Alright, I’m going to get Dr. Dolan now. He’ll be in here in a few minutes.”

Now it was Shawn’s turn to nod as nurse Cabello left the room.

“So, what happened the last time you were here?” I asked.

Shawn turned to face me. “Well, you see, the last time I coughed up blood I was in public and some people saw me and brought me to the emergency room,” Shawn explained. “I was scared then and, no matter how much everyone reassured me, I didn’t believe I was going to be fine.”

“Did you see Dr. Dolan then too?” I asked.

Shawn nodded as someone knocked on the door.

Am I in the clear to enter?” a male’s voice asked.

“It’s all clear, Dr. Dolan,” Shawn said, rolling his eyes.

“I was just making sure,” Dr. Dolan said, entering the room and closing the door behind him. “Camila said that she sensed some sexual tension between you two and thought that as soon as she left you two-”

“That’s enough of that, Dr. Dolan,” Shawn said, his cheeks turning red.

“Awe, I wanted to hear more,” I chuckled, noticing Shawn’s blush.

“Nah, Shawn would kill me if I continued,” Dr. Dolan said. “And what have I told you about calling me Dr. Dolan?”

“Not to?” Shawn asked.

“Yeah, it makes me feel old,” Dr. Dolan said. “Besides, I usually have my other patients just call me Dr. Ethan because of Grayson. Not to mention you and I are friends anyway and, unless we’re mad at each other, we use first names. Now,” Ethan looked at me, “I believe introductions are in order.”

“Oh, I’m Niall, Shawn’s boyfriend,” I said, putting my hand out.

“Shawn’s boyfriend, huh? I’m Ethan,” Ethan said, shaking my hand before turning to face Shawn. “You never told me about a boyfriend.”

“Because we hardly even talk anymore,” Shawn said, rolling his eyes.

“But we’ve been friends since middle school,” Ethan said, pretending to sound hurt.

“Whatever,” Shawn said, rolling his eyes.

“Anyway, what brings you here?” Ethan asked.

“I coughed up blood again,” Shawn said.

“Is this the first time it’s happened since last year?” Ethan asked.

Shawn nodded.

“Sounds like we need to take some tests then,” Ethan said.

“What’s the point if I already know I’m sick?” Shawn asked.

“So we doctors can pinpoint the disease,” Ethan said.

Shawn sighed. “Okay.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, so I obviously know that Shawn’s family doesn’t have any lung diseases (or at least they don’t tell anyone) but for the sake of the story, Shawn’s family does. Sorry, but an author’s got to do what an author’s got to do.
