Chapter 15

Trigger Warning: Attempted Rape

"Lilly! Get up. The castle's under attack."

I shook my sister awake. She bolted awake. She climbed out of bed and I wrapped her robe around her. A loud bang was heard in the distance. I grabbed her hand and ran to the alcove in the wall. We crawled through just as the door slammed open. Angry voices filled the room. Furniture being flipped and broken. Growing fainter as we got further and further away. Bags prepacked slung across our fronts. We grabbed our cloaks and ran for the stables.

We grabbed our horses and rode to the underground caverns that were already ablaze. We kept riding until we came to a cave. We dismounted from our horses. We ran into the cave. Panting heavily as the events of the early morning caught up with us. Lilly doubled over crying.

"Mom was supposed to come home today. What if they killed her?"

"Our mother, Queen Ember Scylla of the Zairyn Empire.The all-powerful flame Queen who survived fifteen assassination attempts. Killed by a bunch of rioters with torches and guns."

Her crying ceased. "You're right."

We heard voices and the sound of hooves coming closer.

"The prince and princess are somewhere around here. They couldn't've gone too far." A husky voice yelled. They came closer to the entrance of the cave.

I turned and put a finger to my lips. I picked up a small stone and threw it at one of our horses. She spooked and ran out of the cave. The men outside ran after the horse thinking one of us was on it.

We mounted the other horse and rode deeper into the cave until we came out on the other side. We rode to the village where The Rescued were staying.

*Adele's POV* 

I awoke to the sound of banging at the door. The sun wasn't even up yet.

'Who could it be at such a late hour?'

I limped to the door and opened it.

"Sorry about the disturbance." The prince bowed

"No need to apologize for your highness. What brings you to us?"

"The castle is under attack. Men burning down everything.Every remnant of Zairyn.We could really use the help."

I stepped aside and let them in.

"I'll wake them."

I dragged my claws and tail across the floor and walls. Everyone woke and came to see what was causing the commotion.

"The prince and princess are here. They need our help defending the land. Guardians try and round up the rioters. Everyone else spread out and warn the village."

I came back to see the two royals arguing over something trivial.

"I wanna help !"

"I'm not gonna let you get hurt."

"I'm not gonna get hurt. If anything I don't want to sit and play a damsel in distress while you get to play the hero."

"Fine. Come but if you get hurt or captured.I'm ensuring that you never go anywhere where there is danger."

"I think your knight training is going to your head Waterboy."

"Ruben and Farida. Come with us."
