Part 8

Cora's Pov.

Ably went into the maze today with minho since one of the other runners got sick, i saw them leave in the morning, Newt was there but that was all before i went to the kitchen. I just kind of thought of it again, wouldnt they make thomas run since he is probably faster.

i was tapping my foot against the ground near the fields, i was asked to watch over the boys by Frypan after id  finished breakfast with Newt. i was in a big thought about why they'd send Ably out...maybe they found something?

i almost kicked the wooden pole i was standing against, but i just sighed and rested my head against it. my brain had so many thoughts in it and they all just wanted to get out. i decided to distract myself by sitting down and pulling out the grass.

"Cora your going to destroy the crops that way" Zart came over and patted my shoulder before he and the others were walking over to the dining area, i guess its lunch...i didnt feel like any food so i went over to the wall with all the gladers names on it. 

i rubbed my hand over the ones with crosses through it, i looked around at how many there were...so many gladers and they've been surviving for 3 years before i got here. i walked over to the maze doors taking a peek in.

a hand touched my shoulder and scared the klunk out of me, i guess thats karma for scaring Frypan. i turned to see Thomas, he looked out in the maze before i noticed chuck running behind him.

"something feels up" thomas said before Chuck got there and i nodded noticing Teresa running over to us from the Homestead, Thomas looked a bit panicked but calmed, Teresa stoo next to us before sitting and watching the doors.

i sat next to her looking out the door before chuck and thomas sat beside us, chuck was always speaking for the hours we spent there, it seemed like everytime another runner came back more people joined us at the doors.

"They're gonna make it" Newt said to particularly no one, Thomas looked up to Newt before standing up by his side.

"what if they dont?" he questioned looking down.

"they're gonna Make it okay" Newt said more harsh, me and teresa had stood up by then pacing back and forth in front of the door, i kept checking looking up every couple of seconds...the suspence was torture.

"5 minutes until the doors close" chuck said silently while everyone kind of started to peel off, only the people who cared stayed, but Frypan had to make dinner...i was going to help but my thoughts told me to wait it out.

"3 minutes" Chuck spoke again before he started walking off, i was kind of glad that he did because his counting down was becoming irritating. Newt couldnt stop fiddling with his lips before someone in the crowd called out.

"LOOK THERE THEY ARE!" i snapped my head to see something wrong, Minho was carrying Ably...we got to do something, i was looking around and they were about 100 meters away but the doors were nearly half way shut.

everyone was screaming and yelling but then Thomas ran into the maze and then the door was shut for the Night, i fell to my Knees right there and banged on the doors. it was probably as useless as screaming in space.

i stood up and looked over to find teresa in a ball against the wall, i walked over and Kneeled Next to her. i put my hand on her shoulder, she looks up before noticing it was me and unravelling before pulling me into a tight hug.

"Teresa, shhh its fine...Thomas is smart so is Minho they can make it." i spoke to her looking around seeing only 3 boys Newt being one of them.

"There is no hope, No one survives a Night in the maze..." i heard on of the boys speak and looked down rocking teresa back and forth. i felt my top being soaked by her constant tears, i thought they'd never stop.

"Teresa, i promise you....Thomas, Minho and Alby are going to make it through the Night...i promise" as if just on queue a heart stopping scream of a griever came out of the maze. i pulled teresa in tighter wondering what happened.

half an hour later teresa fell asleep from all the crying she did, i guess her body is just recovering. i tried to pick her up nealry falling over stopping when i saw Newt running over to us, he took Teresa out of my hands and carried her over to the Homestead.

"she cried for quite a while" Newt said with no humor or anything but a blank tone in his voice, i Nodded holding onto the back of Newts top. if i was honest this would be the first time someone didnt come back from the maze for me...and i felt like it'd be my fault.

"are you just okay with that Newt..." i spoke and he turned to look back at me for a second before looking up at the sky where the stars were starting to appear.

"honestly, i want to scream at the top of my lungs...Minho and Alby were part of the first bunch they sent up...i was one too...i feel empty without them but i have to show leadership." he sighed before his pace seemed to speed up.

soon we reached teresas room in the Homestead, once we had placed her one her bed we slowly and quietly retreated out of the room. Newt shut the door quietly, as soon as he turned around i saw the darkness in his eyes.

i took a step forward and hugged Newt, as soon as Newt rested his head on my shoulder and gripped my body i heard sobs of frustration and fear. i moved my hand up and down his back to sooth him down and quietly 'shhhed' him like how you do to get a baby calm.

"im sorry Cora, showing you my weak side..." he said between his gulps for air, i shook my head continuing to rub his back.

"no Newt, its not weakness...it just means you've been strong for too long"  i mumbled into his shoulder before he leaned up and stared at me, it was growing darker but Newts face was all i could see in the dark.

"Cora, your so strong and beautiful...i promise you ill get you out....i will get you out" he spoke before giving me a quick kiss on the cheek and walking down the hallway towards the stairs. i stood there a bit shocked at his sudden courage.

so you've turned the table Newt...
