Alex
I was looking under the bed when I hear movement from the closet. Gotcha! I was about to open the closet doors when it burst open revealing Blanche holding a pillow threateningly and hissing like a cat, her attempt at trying to look menacing.
I got shocked and shrieked, "Geez, I was just kidding. No need to fight me, not that your weapon seems that helpful." I quickly recovered, laughing at the sight.
She dropped her pillow and smiled arrogantly, "You don't know what I can do with a pillow. I can choke you with this thing." She snarled at me.
"Just come have breakfast. Your parents are going to kill me if they find out you've been skipping your meals again. I was the one who convinced them to let you move into this apartment because this is near a great school."
"Fine."
She stood up, still wearing her blanket over her head as a cape and left her room. I followed her to the kitchen.
"Smells like... PANCAKES!" She yelled and jumped up and down repeatedly.
She grabbed a plate, put a single pancake and proceeded to pour a lot of syrup on her plate. "Now THIS makes life worth living."
I laughed and grabbed my own plate and pancakes and ate.
You would think I'd be scared of having such an extremely weird friend but I'm kinda used to it. I swear living with her is like living with a cat. You can leave her alone to fend for herself, she can go for days without talking to anyone, reading a book or watching a movie, but there are rare occasions where she just gets close to you and opens up about her thoughts. One minute she's hiding from every person she sees, the next she'll be acting like a little kid.
She also tries so hard to give you comfort when you're sad, even though she seems awkward when doing it. An awkward gentle pat on the back or on the head usually goes first then a simple message to cheer you up, usually a quote from a book she read.
I was brought back by the sound of snapping fingers, "Hey Lexy, you okay? You seem to be in a different world right now."
"Yeah, I guess. I was just thinking of some stuff about the lecture yesterday. I still can't get used to having classes till 9 pm."
"Yup. Sucks doesn't it? Good call for finding an apartment nearby. I hate going home at that hour."
It was already 10 am. I checked my schedule and saw that I don't have classes yet, two more days until my next class.
"So do you have classes today?"
"Nope, not yet," I answered while scanning my schedule, laminated and color-coded, thanks to Blanche. I still haven't memorized mine. It's not like it's difficult to memorize, I just don't see the point of memorizing something with effort when you're eventually going to memorize it by habit. Besides, this schedule's good for only one semester.
"You?"
"Same. None today," she said with a toothy grin.
"Well I have to study because I have a grade to maintain unless..."
She went over to the tv and grabbed the DVDs.
"You want to binge watch, don't you?"
"Please? I feel a little guilty when you get left behind on the episodes."
"So why don't you wait for me?"
"I'm guilty enough to keep thinking about it but not guilty enough to stop watching. What am I, crazy?"
"Yes. Kinda."
"Okay, fine."
We spent the whole day watching a collection of movies and series, typical introvert stuff. I figure that I might as well stay in the apartment and watch tv with Blanche since I don't have plans today and feel lazy to go outside.
I noticed the clock and saw the time. It was already four o'clock. No wonder Blanche and I are hungry. No one wanted to leave the place so we did what any logical person in the middle of a binge watch would do, order online. We ordered a lot of spicy food and noodles. Blanche and I usually have competition on who can eat more the spicy food than the other without drinking any water or liquids.
After half an hour, the doorbell rang. "Well, that was fast," I was about to tell Blanche but noticed that she was gone and already on her way to the door still with her blanket-hood. I pause the video and watched her for a while. It was rare to see her interacting with another human being other than those close to her and in a set of circumstances where she isn't forced to do it.
She tidied her hair a little then opened the door. Weird. I saw the poor delivery man greeted by a more human version of ET. Blanche greeted him with a wide smile which makes me puzzled if it's for the food or for the person. Her quick eye contact while giving the money for the food proves that it was for the person. But she did stare at the food longer. Interesting. She was about to say goodbye until the guy handed her the food. She rarely forgets food. She gives him a quick thanks and bye then shuts the door.
All I can think about is that she feels like she's a different person. It's like she isn't even herself. She turns to face me with a blank face, "What?"
