Alex
Blanche was staring at her laptop screen and back at me for quite some time, kind of like the way she looks when she wants to say something but don't know how to say it. She thinks I don't notice it but when you see how her eyes look when she's looking at you, especially when she glares at me, it's very hard to ignore.
Finally she closed her laptop and stood up, "Hey, speaking of bright lights flashing, have you ever encountered a dream like mine?"
"Which dream of yours are we talking about?"
"Y'know, my latest dream with UP where I can kind of make a place and stuff."
"Oh that. Nope. Usually my dreams take control of themselves. Sometimes I don't even have dreams; just blank thoughts but very emotional."
"Is that so?"
"Yup. Not everyone can lucid dream like you. Why are you even asking me?""Nothing. It's just that..." she trailed off. I waited for her to continue what she was going to say.
"UP seemed to know you. UP kinda knew we're roommates."
"Well, we are. You know that, therefore your subconscious knows it too," I say, still confused why she is so worked up on this UP.
"Makes sense," she just replied. My reply seemed to convince her so she went back to her laptop.
"Hey look! I don't have classes tomorrow. Our prof just informed us that they'll be attending a meeting or something. I can now rest in peace," she said as she plopped next to me on the couch, still carrying her laptop.
"At least you wouldn't be worried about going to classes sick again," I said.
"Wait here, I just have to text Carrie," and with that last sentence, she left and went inside her room.
After a few minutes, someone knocked on the front door. I figured it must be the pizza delivery guy. I paid the guy and knocked on Blanche's door. She opened it and I notice that she's already changed into her pajamas.
She sat down and watched the new episode of our favorite series. We each grabbed a plate and a bottle of soda and watch in silence. I was focused on the episode because it turns out that this was such an emotional episode.
It was rare since most episodes are light and funny; just the usual number of killings without harming major characters. This episode shows how one of the lead will be leaving because of the given circumstances that happened. During the usual commercial break just before the credits are shown, I glance at Blanche and I notice rivulets of tears were falling from her eyes.
"Hey, it's okay. They'll be fine. They always are," I said as I pulled her into a hug, not the type that blocks her view, just a sideward one; enough to give her comfort.
She just stayed there sniffling as she laid her head just somewhere between my shoulder and chest. She's still recovering and this type of stress is bad for her. Finally, I feel her sniffling slowly fade and notice that she's breathing at a normal pace.
I realize that my body was feeling numb and I need to move but if I do move, Blanche will wake up. Maybe if I just move her slowly, she won't since she's still pretty tired.
I gently lift her head then move her shoulders just a bit and removed myself from my sleeping prison and laid her head on the pillow. She stirs around, maybe trying to readjust her spot, and I freeze on the spot, like that will help. Blanche stops moving and I breathe a sigh of relief. I cover her with a blanket and turn off the television.
I decide to retire to my room and sleep early. I plan to study when I wake up later. I study better early in the morning. I set my alarm for three am in the morning then let gravity do its job and just fall on my bed. I close my eyes and the next thing I knew, I'm already asleep and dreaming.
"Have you told her yet?" I hear that voice again. It is the figure I keep meeting. Why can I still visit here?
"No. I don't even remember what I do in the real world anymore. It's like I'm detached from my consciousness when I'm asleep. Maybe I'll remember when I wake up."
"Where is she anyway?"
"I decided to leave her on her own in a while and I have another person's death to attend to. Y'know, offering this place, the usual routine. You're not the only ones dying. Don't worry. She'll be alright."
"Can I visit her?"
"I don't know. It's like this is my first time encountering two live souls lingering in here," the voice said in a sarcastic manner.
"I trust you'll not ruin anything here while I'm gone and visit the other side of my creation?"
"I can barely move around here. You know the answer alre-" and it left me to navigate the darkness all alone.
