Emmi felt a bit dazed as she began to wake up. She did, however, slightly remember being up much earlier that morning and her Mama coming in to hold her. While feeling too tired to open her eyes, she knew that she was still being held from the strong arms around her and the sound of a heartbeat in her ears.
Content to simply be held, she wiggled slightly to try and get closer to her caregiver. The bit of movement caused something to be pulled tighter around her and Diana to bounce her lightly. The limited wiggle room and tight feeling told the little girl that she was swaddled in the blanket from her crib.
"Go back to sleep, peanut. It's okay" the older woman whispered kindly.
A tiny whimper escaped the girl's lips as she tried with all of her might to open her eyes. Although she didn't want to leave the comfort of her blanket or Mama's hold, she wanted to be coherent enough to feel the safety and warmth.
"Uh oh. I think there's a tiny girl who wants to wake up."
Finally opening her eyes, Emmi only stared up at her Mommy briefly before letting out a yawn and then moving her lips around as if looking for something to suckle.
As she watched the behavior, Diana thought how much the girl in her arms reminded her of a newborn. She had only experienced little Emmi fully once before; and that was not enough to give her a true understanding of the age of the girl's headspace. Despite this, the little one currently in her arms was clearly very young.
"Mama's girl" the black haired woman said while leaning down to press a kiss to the baby's forehead.
She went to adjust her arms and realized that the diaper she had put on Emmi the night before seemed soggy. Seeing that the girl was not likely to fall back asleep, she decided to go ahead and change her.
As she stood with the girl in her arms, a small whine came from the child. She looked up at her caregiver and studied her face intently.
"What is it, baby girl? Are you looking at your Mama?" Diana cooed down at her staring little one.
Reaching the nursery, the older woman became a bit worried at how Emmi would react to having her diaper changed. She had yet to change a dirty diaper and was admittedly a bit nervous. Even still, she wanted to remain strong and confident for her baby.
"A certain little girl needs a new diaper, I think" she spoke while placing the swaddled girl on the ground.
Immediately, the tiny baby began to cry from the loss of contact. She wanted to keep being held and didn't understand why she was being set down.
Diana looked sympathetic at how upset the girl was. She tried to shush her before moving over slightly to grab the items needed for a change.
"It's okay, peanut. Mommy is just going to change you."
Slowly unswaddling the girl caused a new barrage of tears. Emmi was upset first from being put down and now again from the loss of her warmth and security.
