Hundreds of years ago, magic users and humans lived together in harmony, now, that would be hard for anyone to imagine, especially for a lone magic user. Magic was outlawed all across the world, it had been ever since anyone alive could remember,

Most magic users couldn’t hope to live past the age of five years old, and that was if they were lucky. One was extremely lucky if they managed to survive in the world past that, since the authorities were difficult to avoid. And people were impossible to trust.

One of the very few lucky ones, 15 years old, lived hidden away in a large country manor with his mother and father, he was kept hidden from everyone, while his non-magical parents tried to teach him to control his abilities.

“Ok, Can you hide your wings for me?” His father asked him, they stood in the basement of their house, the ceiling dripping slightly, the room smelled of stone and earth, there were stone pillars holding the roof up and a couple of barrels scattered around the room.

The dirty blonde boy was stood in the centre of the room, purple feathered wings outstretched in the large space, he closed his eyes and concentrated for a second, before his wings folded in and disappeared, as if they were never there.

He opened his eyes to see his father smiling,
"You did it!" He said, beaming from ear to ear, "I'm so proud of you,”
He smiled back, looking over his shoulder, “It actually worked!”
“Come on, you’ve worked really hard today.” His father said, leading him upstairs into the kitchen,

The boy sat at a large table, his wings showing, their tips draping along the floor, a plate of cake sat on the table in front of him, his mother and father sat across the table, looking at him fondly.
“Soon you’ll be able to go outside,” His mother told him happily,
“Really?” he asked, looking up from his cake with a large smile,
“Yes, if you can hide your wings for long-”

He was interrupted by a deafening bang, the noise shook the house and seconds later, three men in armour came running into the room, two of them held guns up at eye level, the other was seemingly unarmed, each of them had the symbol of a black flame with a red cross behind it, the authorities. Grian tucked his wings behind him, a feeble attempt to hide them, his father and mother came and stood in front of him.

“What do you want with us?” His father said clearly, though his hands behind his back were visibly shaking, all three of them knew what this meant.
“Hand over the magic user and you won't be hurt.” The man without a gun said.
“But you’ll hurt him, I won't let you!” His mother said, moving to stand next to his father, shielding him.
“Have it your way.” The man said, the other two raising their guns,

“No!” The boy yelled, pushing past his parents, “Please don't hurt them!”
“We won't if you give yourself to us.” The man smirked, the boy was stuck, he didn’t want to be killed, but he knew he must if his parents would be safe.

----

The authorities marched the boy to the town centre, his wings in full view. One of the men kept a gun pointed at his head, while the other held his hands behind his back. People came out of their houses to watch the execution. They lived in fear of magic users, so were happy to see another one go.

The man stood behind him, pushed him roughly to his knees, there was a crack and a scream of pain as one of the bones in his wing broke after impact with the floor, the man to his left cocked the pistol against his head.
“Shut up, filthy Magic user.” He growled, The boy whimpered, silent tears of pain rolling down his face.

“Today we witness the execution of a Magic User,” The man not holding him said to the crowd, “We execute those of this evil race to make sure the world remains a safe place for all.”

he signaled to the man with the gun.

There was a loud bang right in the boy’s ear.

He heard a shout, his name, called by his mother.

And everything went black.
