Sliding open the glass door to the backyard, I throw a glance over my shoulder to make sure Blue is following. He is, looking around with interest. I hurry ahead of him and stop at the edge of the raised porch and hop onto the dewy grass. Another check certifies he's paying attention.
"C'mon," I say absentmindedly as I spread a blanket on the grass. Yes, it is the same one I used at lunch with Ink and Fell. "Sit down, the grass doesn't bite." When I look up, he carefully lowers one foot down, but he's still pretty short and begins to loose his balance at the edge of the porch. Without thinking, I take his hands and pull him down, and we unfortunately collide (though not hard). He looks up at me and I'm pretty sure we're both embarrassed.
"I said let's go," I quickly clap my hands together and Blue flops onto the blanket. I sit next to him and look up at the sky. We're just in time.
I only say "There" and he gets the message. When I see him out of the corner of my eye again, his have big stars in them, and I'm sure they're not reflections of the millions above us.
The stars are so pretty against the dark sky. They're dazzling white dots against a dull, gray, expanse above me. To be honest, it's nice to have company even if the company isn't saying anything to me. I'm enjoying the stillness.
Until there's an earsplitting crash and an angry yell inside. Bolting upright, Blue and I share a startled look and we dash inside to find a few shattered plates strewn on the floor and Ink looking at me with his mouth agape.
"What is going on?" I scowl, frowning at the mess in front of me. "Where's Fell?"
Ink points next to him underneath the counter. I try not to grin and luckily I manage to maintain my stern look.
"I was putting away dishes-" Ink starts, but then Fell makes his appearance and scowls at him.
"You were not!" he accuses. "You were making that drawing of Y/N!"
"Well, then you came by and told me it was-"
"You didn't have to get angry and-"
"SHUT UP!" I realize that wasn't the thing to yell say when everyone looks at me, startled. "I don't care who started it," I say a little too ferociously. "Just please be quiet. I am trying to do something with Blue."
"Then get everyone out there if you won't let anyone breathe in case we disturb you," Fell growls, and his comment gives me an idea.
Good idea," I whirl around and point at the book door. "Outside. Blue, would you get Hip-Hop for me?" The smallest skeleton nods and dashes upstairs as I drag the two left outside with me. The grass is cold under my bare feet. As Fell and Ink sit down, I gaze around at my backyard. Everything has a tint of white at its edge, and it slowly fades back into the gray or black base that the object is "colored".
Color. I hate that word.
"Y/N!" Blue interrupts my very dramatic self moment and I turn to see him pulling Hip-Hop out the back door by the arm with the taller skeleton muttering "Ow ow ow ow ow" under his breath and clutching his sleeve. I let a weak smile slip and join the others. I point up with out saying anything when we're all gathered together.
"Wow," Ink breathes. I look over see that and Ink and Blue share the same big stars in their eyes, while Hip-Hop and Fell just look at the sky sort of impressed. "This would be such a great painting."
I look away guilty. I want to tell them what I see, I want to so bad. But I know then they'd see me differently, and I don't want that to happen, especially since we've become such good friends. As we sit in the stillness, a bright object catches my eye.
"A shooting star!" I exclaim, gesturing towards said star. "Make a wish or whatever." I close my eyes and shut them hard. I wish I could gather the courage to- No, no, that's not what I want. I wish my vision would- No, that's not it either! I open my eyes to look at the others, but when I look at the sky, the star is already gone. So much for wishing on that.
I pull my knees to my chest and keep watching the starry sky. No one moves, not even energetic little Blue. We're all frozen. But I get up abruptly and step onto the porch.
"I'm going to go inside," I mumble. "I'm getting cold." The truth is, I can't stand looking at something that others see differently from me. It sounds stupid, but I hate it. I'm not staying out there.
"Hey." It's Hip-Hop, who has trailed me through the back door. I don't bother to acknowledge him. He persists.
"What are you doing?" he tries again. I sigh and look at him with an annoyed expressions as I stick my hand in a potato chip bag.
"What does it look like?" I huff, not really knowing why the hell I became agitated so fast.
"It looks like you're eating potato chips," he half grins, "and ignoring me."
"Correct." I lick salt off my fingers and stare at him fiercely, although I doubt he's scared. I'm not the most intimidating person out there.
"Look, I just came to say thanks." He puts his hands in his pockets and rocks back and forth. "I was kinda an idiot in the beginning, you know? But you just let me crash here, without really having an attitude. Besides maybe that time you lashed out when we first met. But seriously, thanks." He pauses, and I grow warm. He's thanking me for letting him stay? I've never gotten thanked for anything, really.
"No problem," I shrug. "I have to admit, the company is nice." Hip-Hop nods understandingly.
"I'm heading back out," he says, jabbing his thumb towards the backyard. "See you around."
When he's halfway out the door, I grin and call, "I probably will, seeing you live here!"
Live. It's almost frightening how easily that word rolls off my tongue.
