THE SILENCE THAT followed after the question was the loudest Sadie had ever heard in all her life. Her breath hitched at his words, eyes darting around every feature of his face as to examine any key point of humor within his demeanor. But she failed to find anything of the sorts.

His expression remained neutral. Well, perhaps not neutral exactly. He looked like a lovesick puppy actually—but he looked as serious as a heart attack. He was genuinely curious.

She batted her lashes and adjusted her position in which she had been lying back on the grass. "Why would you ask me that?" her voice cracked.

Jacob hesitated. As if the question needed an answer he himself had not yet found either. "Just wondering." he told her. "We talk about my love life. I'm curious to hear about your experiences. If you have any." his words were slow and dauntless. He was trying to convince himself more than he was trying to convince her.

Sadie bit her inner cheek. "No." she said bluntly.

"Never?"

"Never."

He knitted his eyebrows together at that. "Forgive me, but I find that kinda hard to believe."

She shook her head at him. "Why's that?"

"Because to say you, someone who's been roaming this dying floating rock in the middle of space for a hundred and something years, has never experienced anything in terms of intimacy, sounds like a fib."

"It's the truth." she shrugged.

"Honest?"

Sadie opened her mouth to speak, but she found herself at a loss for words as it all came rushing back to her like a rapid montage. One full of memories she was determined to erase from her memory forever a long time ago. Sadly she could never find it easy to do so. Too many ties and too many key points which had played a heavy role in her becoming who she was today. She could not let go of them so easily, despite her prayers. She turned her head to look up above them where the sun had finally set and the sky had transitioned from its beautiful golden hue to a dark greyish-blue. "Maybe once." she mumbled.
