After lunch, Cora left Jack, and followed her Mama and Daddy to the General room. A lady was sitting there, and she asked Cora and Mama and Daddy a lot of questions. Then she gave them passes. Cora wasn't able to look at them though, because daddy quickly pocketed them. Cora smiled at the lady, but the lady didn't smile back. She was a first class lady, and Cora presumed that she thought Cora was less than her. She didn't know why. Cora was a girl, just like her. She had brown hair and brown eyes, like her.
A little girl stood behind her. Cora waved.
"Hi I'm Cora. What's your name?" She said to the little girl.
The little girl looked up at her mom.
"Samantha." She said plainly.
Cora didn't know what to say next.
"How old are you? I'm 5." Cora said.
Samantha looked at her finger nail, brushed her skirt, and looked at Cora in a rude way.
"10." She finally said.
"I like your dress." Cora said, smiling at Samantha, very friendly.
Samantha didn't say anything. She glared at Cora, and looked down at her doll in a disgusted way. Cora noticed Samantha was looking at her doll, and held it up in front of her.
"This is my dolly." She said.
Samantha laughed, very quietly.
"It's ugly, just like you." She finally said.
Cora's face fell. She wasn't  ugly, was she? Her doll certainly wasn't.
Cora's face burned with anger. She stomped her foot, and yelled at Samantha, not caring what her mother might say.
"I am not ugly, you are!" She called.
Mama gasped, pulling Cora toward her.
"Thank you for helping us get our passes." Mama said.
The lady looked disgusted.
"Good for nothing, 3rd class gutter rats...." She said, her voice trailing off. Cora turned away and ran, all the way to Jack's  room.
Cora immediately began crying as soon as Jack opened the door.
"What's wrong?" Jack said, putting Cora on his lap.
Cora told Jack everything that had just happened, calming down with every word. Cora knew she wasn't ugly, nor her doll.
"Jack." She said, looking up at him.
"What's the matter?" He said, smiling down at Cora.
Cora smiled back at him, and said ,
"Are all 3rd class people Gutter Rats?"
Jack laughed. "No." He said. "We just have more experience in the real world, and they can't accept that."
"Rose?" Cora asked.
"No. Not at all Rose." Jack said.
Cora smiled, and leaned against Jack. She felt her eyelids get heavy, and suddenly she fell asleep, dreaming of rats!
