Cora wanted to stop, scream and cry. But all she could do was run up on the stairs. Stairway after stairway she ran until she reached the top deck.
Cora waited in a line for a lifeboat as her Mama had told her to. Cora grieved and held onto her doll. What would she do when she reached New York City? Live on the streets? She wanted everything to be back to normal. She wanted to be asleep in her soft bed, Her parents right near by. Cora felt tears rushing down her cheeks.
"Cora?" Someone called from behind.
Cora looked behind her. It was Rose!
Cora felt as relived as a person could ever feel. She ran and jumped into a hug with her.
"Where's Jack?" Cora asked her.
"Right over there." Rose said.
Cora cried harder and had a hug with Jack. He picked her up and asked;
"What happened? Why are you all alone?"
Cora struggled to talk in between sobs.
"My parents drowned." She managed to mumble.
Rose hugged her.
"Well we aren't going to let you go off all alone. You can stay with us." She said.
Cora smiled. Weakly, but she smiled. She clung onto Rose and buried her face in her coat.When they were close to the front of the life boat line, Jack pulled a blanked around his face. It dropped over his shoulders and down to his feet.
"Women and children only." The ship officer said.
"This is my sister, she's blind." Rose said, pointing to Jack.
Cora was so confused. Jack WASN'T Rose's sister, but Cora knew better then to ask questions right in front of the ship officer.
She climbed into the boat after Jack, and sat on Rose's lap.As the lifeboat was lowered into the sea, Cora looked up at the sinking Titanic. She remembered what it once was. A floating heaven.
